I have new neighbors, retired LEO from Central California. Having lived in the Socialist Republic of Kalifornia and Hawaii they moved to Arizona where they can have gun freedom. He too is a shooting enthusiast and wants to get back into reloading after giving it up some 5 or 6 years ago. Among his rifles, he has an AK47 (7.62 X 39). This caused me to realize that I am among a minority of gun enthusiasts who has never owned an AK. As luck would have it, as I was looking around the LGS I came across one from Century Arms. My research makes this look like a cost-effective way to get into the AK47 club. From everything I read this is a big-kids plinker. One thing it has going for it is that during all this ammo shortage there is plenty of ammo available, locally. Whit the global popularity of the AK I am assuming that some of you must have one (or two, maybe). Before I take the plunge, I though I would ask the opinion of this group. What do you think, guys?

Larry, I have never owned one, but in contemplating firearms purchases, you need to consider such weighty topics as, does it have a trigger, is it interesting, does it have all the necessary parts, and can I sneak it past the Mrs ?? Let us know how it works out !

Larry, have fun with your new toy. I too am among the slackers who don't own an AK 47, my fun gun is a Mini 14. I did scold my writer also!

Larry I like Pooh and Bob own either an AK or AR platform. Now like Bob I am interested in the Ruger either the Mini14 or the Mini 30 (7,622x39) To me the 7.62x39 is a more versatile round as it's in the 30/30 class and better suited for medium game use. Yes there's other rounds for the AR15 size frame that can be used on mediun size game. If one want to seek larger game then the AR10 platform is the way to go. For as ammo goes for the AR15 and the AK47 the most produced ammo ix the 5.56x45 aka .223 Rem. and the 7.62x39. So with that let us know if you take the plunge into the world of the AK.

If I bought one it'd just be a gun safe queen, so I never did. Had a nice stainless Mini 14, one of the early ones with the wooden upper stock.....beautiful gun, but I asked my youngest son which of my collection did he want, and it was the Mini......so it's been given away. It was sure fun to shoot. Now I only have an AR 10 and and an AR 15....and neither are as comfortable to shoulder as the Mini, but that's Okay.....I'm getting old anyway.
A brother in law had a Mini 30 and he didn't care for it much. Seemed to jam a lot not unlike his M1 carbine. But that's all I know. My Mini 14 never ever jammed....even with Wolf junk.

I'm weird. Won't own one I can't load for. Had an SKS. Took a couple deer with Sierra 125gr FPHP. No feeding problems. Deer didn't complain. I did remove the bayonet. One day it doubled on me. With teenage boys in the house, it had to go down the road. It was heavy. Rather hunt with mini 14 or Marlin 30/30

I love throwing something like this out to this group. You never disappoint me in getting all the pros & cons on any shooting related subject. I myself have a number of AR 15’s and an AR 10 as well as a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle. From all of your input and a lot of research I have come to the conclusion that I will not be buying an AK right now. However I am now looking at the Ruger Mini 30. I haven’t located one to get my hands on it yet so no final decision has been made. When I start sniffing around at a possible new gun purchase I find myself on rabbit trails that take me some interesting places. I often find the final decision is nothing like what got me to looking in the first place. It’s kind of like pulling weeds in the yard . . . I find myself on the other side of the yard not knowing just how I got there. Thanks for all the responses and opinions.

One of the most gorgeous semi-autos ever built.....sniff. (But I'm glad one of my boys wanted it.) and Who cares whether it can shoot the eye out of a squirrel at 100 yards or not. Neither can a AK. They're not long range tools.

It's been just over five months since I kicked off this thread and asked my original question about buying an AK47 . . . Yesterday, I stopped at one of my local shops and an AK followed me home. It's a Riley Defense, out of North Carolina (https://rileydefense.com/product/model-rak-47-c-l/) A VERY cost effective way to start into a "new" category of firearms. I intend to use it as a plinker and so I cut all the corners (for once I actually stayed under my budget). Knowing that I was going to end-up with something in the 7.62 X 39 world I have been accumulating reloading necessities and have everything I need, so today I start reloading a "new cartridge". All I needed to add was a set of dies, some brass and some .310" 123gr. 30-cal bullets. You'd think at my age . . . I'd quit adding to this hobby and start paring down . . .

Congratulations Larry, and as you said at your age you should start paring down, however you just gave me the unneeded nudge to scratch an itch 20 ga. Ithaca 37 or Rugger 77.22 WRM or is it .22WMR and I'm past that age!

Larry, I've been saving this one for a special occasion. Have fun ! Much of the joy of a new rifle is getting it up and running !

Congrats Larry on the adoption to the family. I last year add a Ruger Redhawk in 41mag. I am now eyeing a new 9mm by S&W. I'm also thinking of a flintlock again.

I know I'm late for the party and congrats Larry! I have shot many AK's but for some reason (maybe it's me) but have never found one that had the potential to be as accurate as any of my AR's. I know they are out there, I just haven't found one yet. Those of you that know me know that I don't do things halfway. If I were to add an AK to my collection that would mean an entire new bug out setup! Besides if it really came down to the "I may need one, I figure I'll just pick one up off the ground.
