My recollection is that some/all of us have some degree of involvement with Hunter Ed. The Chief and I were recently talking about the attrition of instructors due to wear and tear. The discussion became a little more focused this afternoon with the death of one of our team. Where do you recruit ? I've sort of thought some of the recent grads (particularly some of the older ones) might be a source. Any thoughts ?

The following is from the PA Gane Commission web site. Four of my grandkids took courses. Two in July and two in August. Each class is conducted by a PA Game Officer and a set of volunteers.
Become An Instructor – Pass On The Tradition
The Game Commission needs knowledgeable and experienced individuals to teach basic and advanced programs. Volunteer instructors receive all necessary teaching aids and materials, including the easy-to-use, standardized curriculum. Instructors must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.
What's the commitment? Volunteer instructors should have the ability to give 12 to 16 hours each year. Courses average six hours for a classroom format and eight hours for a skills station format. Brief annual instructor training is required.
Be part of hunter education's success! With more than 2 million students certified since 1959, statistics show hunting fatalities and injuries from firearms have declined by more than 80 percent. Hunter education is working!
Share your love of the outdoors with the next generation
Promote safe and responsible hunting and furtaking

Arizona Game & Fish has a trade booth at a lot of outdoor related trade shows and many gun shows. They also have information at many outdoor and sporting goods stores. In recent conversations with AG&F people they are dealing with the same issues of attrition and are in need. As a thought, you might look into local NRA Instructors and recruit from there; local Boy Scout Troops may have some good leads. Good Luck.

Our local gun club sponsors two gun shows a year(spring/fall pre-covid), plus a booth at the county fair where we talk about what the club offers to people of all ages. More than a place to set up targets outdoors and indoors and offering special shoots for any interest, it also has an annual Youth Fest for community kids and youth to come an get experience shooting pistols, rifles, and black powder firearms. We feed them lunch, and go at it another hour or so. We are NRA affiliated, have police and sheriff departments involved, and get instructors from them and our membership. Our instructors, I believe, are pre-trained/qualified at NRA events. We even offer air rifle shoots and instruction for kids and youth. I am no longer involved with it as much.....maybe becoming too Biden-like.... My last job there was Newletter Editor for 5 years. So I haven't dealt with the kids for a while. I'll send you two pictures that is typical at Youth Fest.
Above, a good friend who died too young.....heart related. He was there every year....loved the kids.
Two more from the mountain man/black powder group.....they don't look too tired.....at the close of that years Youth Fest.
Use groups like that ...... they are always willing and the kids love 'em.
My point is....if you offer the community events like that, we found that good people came out of the wood works to volunteer to help, if you advertise for help. Do that at fair booths, gun club meetings, gun show booths, even find a newspaper editor to do a community write up.....if your community isn't so liberal they back away with horror.....we don't have that problem here in New Mexico except in Santa Fe. Speaking of horrors.....
Speaking of Boy Scout Troops.....I was a scoutmaster for 15 years before I joined the club......for a......rest.

Pooh, your recollecting seem to be good. Here in California our Fish & Wildlife officers our the regional leaders and given the large area they supervise rely on us to provide possible candidates that they then train. The reason I'm so late in response to this is, I have been trying to catch up with a few of you by spending the last 6 day in the hospital to treat an infection in my leg. First time ever spending the night ,let alone 5 nights!

Bob, I hope you're better. Congratulations on your escape ! My older brother just had some treatment for some kind of infection that hit his liver. He cut a deal to go home, but he has to give himself more of the stuff daily. His daughter is a pretty sharp RN, who will oversee the process.
I appreciate all the responses. Finding people to do this is sort of like my vague recollections of looking for girls. (I was taken off the market about fifty years ago, so I'm sure I've forgotten a lot !) You just need to keep your eyes open !
Thanks !

Pooh, look for middle age people who are winding down from raising a family....they tend to be used to being busy, and so give them the opportunity to get back in the comfort zone.
Bob, hope you are mending well....and stay out of that hospital....people get sick in there. Glad you found the help you needed tho.....sometimes that last resort is the only one.....
The absolute worst thing I've gone through was the double heart bypass.....the next day was the worst hell I ever endured. Do what you need to do to prevent that special experience.

We are about to have the same issue. The core of our group has been teaching together for near 25 years. Retirements, old age infirmities and life goes on events are taking their toll. We have no replacements standing in the wings. I thought a couple of my sons would step in, but life raising children is so busy they can't grab their butt with both hands. If I understand correctly, in some states hunter participation / permit sales are declining. Don't know the answer. It's been a good ride. Glad I did it.
