Sometime back I stated that I need to change the rings and mount on my squirrel gun. What I had put on had the scope sitting high. I had a BKL Technologies Rimfire & Airgun mount attached to the 3/8th dovetail then the rings and scope as I stated that made it high that it caused me to lift my cheek off the stock to shoot. I had plab A and plan B to use. I got two sets of rings. Plan A was to go on the dove tail and Plan B were a low set to go on the rail mount. I tried Plan A and that worked out to my satisfaction. The ring were "Warne" and "Vortex" These are the first rings that reading over their instructions that stated about torque settings for the screws. I have had Weaver and Burris and Simmons rings and to date none had any torque settings listed. So I went in search of a torque drive and settled on the one from "Fix It Sticks" store.fixitsticks.com/collections/all-shooting I ordered through MidwayUSA the ALL-IN-ONE TORQUE DRIVER KIT now you can order the ALL-IN-ONE TORQUE DRIVER by it's self. The torqe settings for the screws in "Inch Pounds" yes Inch NOT Foot pounds. I went with the Warne rings all screws were set to 25 inch pounds per the instructions. Went to the range to sight in and I'm close to MOA but is at minute of squirrel. The other rings the Vortex their settings were as follows. Screws fot the base are 25 inch pounds and the screws for the ring half are 15 inch pounds. So anyone else come across this in putting your own rings and mounts of your firearm?

Like you, I never worried about torque nor any of the other fancicfied mounting instructions, just line it up "plum" and tighten it down. About 30 years ago I read about and got interested in the more technical aspect of mounting scopes and made my own alignment tool and bought an inch pound torque wrench then with my lathe I made a more accurate individual ring alignment tool. Ironically I have some Lyman All American 4X scopes which have never been off the rifle since new and are still better than I, so I'm not sure about all of the new techniques.

Give me a place to stand and a long-enough lever, and I will invariably break the lever.

I'd sort of been looking at the torque wrench that Lyman introduced last year, and as the time nears, guess I'll look at the one Hacker used ! It's not like I mount scopes every day, but when I do...

Back when I was a pup I had an ‘old guy” teach me to mount scopes. I was taught to use LockTite” and tap the top of the screwdriver lightly with a small hammer as I tightened the screws and to just use the strength of one “unassisted” hand. Like Bob, I have rifles in the safe with scopes mounted way back then and they are still as true and solid as ever. However, being a “what’s new” kind of nut I have bought different torque wrenches, etc over the years. I now have more than I’d like to admit to but when I mounted a scope for a friend last summer I used the old method followed by “checking it” with a torque wrench. Interestingly enough, when I do double check my mountings with a torque wrench I find the old method seems to be just right. Go Figure ! If I were to buy a torque wrench today I would stay with the Fix It Sticks that Hacker mentioned. Well made and compact. Back to Hackers original question . . . one way or another, I always torque scope mountings and find most manufacturers have recommended ranges in their literature.

Larry, we were either trained by the same guy or more likely close to the same time as you described my "old" method to a "T".

If it works . . . don't fix it!

With regard to the older method, I used Buhler rings and mounts exclusively and never had an issue however I have had to true a couple of newer ring/mounts more recently, including lapping.
