I have to admit to breaking one of my own rules, I'm loading for a friend and fellow Hunter Ed. Instructor. I'm loading a 6.5X55 with 120 gr. Barnes bullets seated at Barnes' suggested 0.050"off the lands. The completed cartridge looks fragile but it works. The primary reason for the post is, while he was shooting the loads which were 5 each at a 1 gr. ladder step, he was not paying attention to the load and was shooting 3 @ one charge and 2 @ a 2 gr. difference. The target reflected this as he would get a clover leaf and then 2 very close or touching but 1/2 to 3/4" above or below for the 5 shots. All loads were very consistent in this regard and quite interesting. I'm now going to load some at the heavier charge but seated 0.005" and 0.010"deeper to see what difference that makes. At least they won't look so fragile.

Well Bob looks like you have a prodject to work on. Yes we like to ead of the results of the work. When I get fully mended and warm weather hits here I have 6.5 Creedmore to work on for the son-in-law and some 30/30 for me with a different bullet with LVR powder.

Please keep us posted (both of you). Your efforts may save my son and I some time and provide better starting points on his 6.5 Grendel.

Interesting stuff, Bob. I'd be interested in some details about which powder and what velocity you're trying to get. Back when they were coming in cheap, the surplus Sweedish Mausers looked interesting, but I think one of the kids got uppity and wanted to eat or something...

Pooh, the rifle is a new M70 Winchester with the classic controlled feed. The present load I'm going to work with is Barnes' published maximum 46 gr. RL 22 for the 120 gr. TSX with a published velocity of 2,760 FPS,I have not chronographed the load yet. The ladder I started with showed 43grs. as a minimum I worked up from there in 1 gr. increments. I could probably push the load some since it was developed for the older rifles and a 51,000 psi pressure and I'm sure this action will stand the more modern 60,000 psi +/- loadings, not going there though. I don't usually show load data however this is a published load so I don't mind.

Thanks, Bob-btw, I was just wondering what powder you were using, whether is was new or a classic. I was prepared to extrapolate from a velocity goal to see what ball park you were playing in ! I share your caution on sharing load data ! Project looks like fun. Although you're probably awash in data, I think Handloader had an article on the Sweede in the last year or so.
Hacker, what are you switching around in 30=30 ? I'm still attached to the Lyman 311041 and the Sierra 150 gr. flatpoint, but that's me...

Pooh the 30/30 is a single shot and I have been interested in using 30 Cal .308 150 gr SST® (300 Savage) I got 400 blems that I plan on trying out with LVR powder. I made a dummy round Starline case and seated this bullet to crimp grove and will apply a crimp. This is so I can have as close to uniform start pressures as I can get and will see how they will perform on target.
