I finally started my trip down the CCW path for better or worse. I actually resisted for a long time how ever as times have changed so have I. For now it will be 1911s an Mod. 27,this may change as time goes by. What are your thoughts on the choices?

Bob I'm guessing that you want to conceal. 1911s would be a better choice in that regard. A commander size or just a tad smaller would be good. Now the Mod 27 being a N frame would be bulky. Now if you are going for open then choose what you like most.

Gary, the 27 is for my truck when going to the ranch, I won't have to worry about locking and separating the gun and ammo while I'm in the truck. Thanks for the input.

Not sure how your county is but back when I lived in Riverside County I obtained my California CCW and got my wife one, then her girlfriend and her girlfriend's husband. I lead a total of seven people through the maze of requirements in those days . . . and that's when Kamala was the head of California's D.O.J. (what a bitch). Unless things have changed, you have to quality with serial number specific guns and then can only carry those you qualified with. If that's still the requirement make sure you have one on your CCW that you might want to carry. The limit at that time in Riverside was five and it was difficult to add one after issue of the permit. Good luck and congratulations (in advance).

Both classics ! I carried (and still do on occasion) a Browning HP-I'm not a huge guy, but have managed concealment, but I find myself going to an EC9s more often these days, as it's more manageable. (Yeah...me with a plastic gun...) Best of luck with the paper work. I'm sure the Bear Republic will make things easy for you ! (ahem.)

Well as the time for my firearm education gets closer I have been thinking (I know scary) and now am considering a more convenient carry gun. I torn between a smaller revolver .357/.38 or a S&W 39 I think I want a double action as opposed to the 1911s, your thoughts please.

Bob if I'm going to carry a revolver I would go with a J to K size frame as I have carried both. I also prefer the three inch barrel in a revolver. Now in a semi I like a barrel of 3.5 as a carry option. Now in these small semi's you have to see what fits good in your hand. Some of these small autos don't have room for your pinky finger and these have the attachment on the bottom of the mag for your pinky to hold on to. When looking for a small auto if there's no room for the pinky then I would not buy it. If doesn't sit right in the hand then you won't shoot well with it.

Gary, I agree with you about "fit" that is why I'm considering the M 39 4" version and about 1/2 # lighter than the 1911. Also agree about the revolver I already have N frames 1 will be registered for the car or truck and I am looking at Ks 3-4" for holstered carry. Thanks for the input.

Bob, good luck with whatever you decide. While I bow toward the throne of JMB, I have developed almost an affection for that little Ruger. Works in my hand. Small enough so the only place I don't wear it is court. (I stay on good terms with my court officers...) Worth a look-we're dogs of approximately the same vintage, and I bet you're as adept at learning new tricks as I am. Keep us posted on what you do.

Have carried the Ruger LCP .380 for several years. Pocket or IWB carry, depending on clothing and weather. I know it's not a Model 29, but if I've got my head on a swivel and can avoid the situation, I am ahead of the game. There is a school of thought that promotes 22lr. Multiple quick hits made with controllable recoil better than relatively slow fire due to heavy recoil. YMMV

Well as I posted on"at the range" I'm now a step closer as I completed my Psych evaluation today, some 500 written questions and an oral interview. Next is an interview by a detective then on to the Chief.

I see you are hopefully getting closer. They will go over the Psych test with a microscope looking for any reason to say no as I do not put it past the commies out there doing such but wishing you all the best in this. Here so far in my state I don't have to go through all of this. In fact I just received a notice from my county's sheriffs dept. a notice to renew soon. Now with the commies in control of the state house here they are pushing their antigun agenda. One is the stamping of ammo and if passes you have to get rid of what you have by 2024. On the senate side has a Republican majority hoping no turncoats and the senate can stop it.

Pooh, it is a PROCESS but not insurmountable thanks to SCOTUS. Gary, I did pass the evaluation, aside from the written portion the verbal was a snap, two questions; have you ever had an unintentional discharge from a gun- yes 70 years ago, Do you drink to intoxication- No, done.

Interesting enough the whole process was only 2 months and it could have been three weeks less had I got my referrals sooner which I could have and not cancelled the range and the psych. I was prepared for an extended wait as I had heard from others.

The CCW saga just keeps on giving. I started thinking again(what a surprise) and I realized that under no circumstances do I want to surrender my M27 nor K22 so purchased an S&W shield MP9 which, along with my Colt 1991, will become my primary carry instruments as they are easily replaceable with the 27 not too far behind. Hopefully there will be no more to add on my part except conversationally(BS type stuff).

Good choice. I hate to think of my Browning decomposing in an evidence locker. The EC9 is a lot easier to walk away from.

It's been some years since i resided in Kalifornia but at that time adding a gun to your CCW was almost as involved as getting the CCW in the first place. You had to qualify and interview then they would re-issue your CCW with the serial numbers of the guns you were permitted to carry. I hope things have gotten better since then.

Here in Gods country (ran by liberals at the moment) we still have some freedoms left. CC is easy here....you take the class....and at the "shooting" part of the class you qualify with the largest caliber of weapon you intend on carrying for each class of handgun. So for me I qualified with a .45 ACP Kimber, and a .357 Ruger Security Six.
That means I can carry any semiauto in .45acp or less.....and any revolver .357 or smaller. Since it's caliber driven, that means I can even carry the "lesser" caliber .44mag if I had some masochistic reason do want to do that.....I don't.
They have a third class of handgun....."derringer." I had a friend, (deceased) who qualified for .45 colt derringer in addition to pistol and revolver! Talk about masochistic! He was in tears by the time he shot enough to qualify.....but he did!......I'm not that brave!
The best part? No one knows or cares what particular weapon you shoot as long as you've qualified for that caliber or bigger. I carry a .40S&W Ruger. I shoot it at least twice as well as my other handguns....just fits I guess......and no one knows or cares but me.....) Love my SR40!

Because the Kalifornia CCW requires you to qualify with specific (by serial number) handguns. I qualified with my S&W 629 (2” 44 Magnum) as one of my guns. During the interview the deputy had some hard question as to why. It is less than .45 (largest allowed caliber) and a legal gun, but he was hesitant to sign off. I explained that the only time I carry if is when I am doing wildlife photography and it is in my camera bag. While in the Sierras, along the border wit Nevada, I don’t want to be caught with it on the California side without the CCW. He finally agreed and signed off so my CCW lists it as one of the five guns that I qualified with.

The more I think about it....the more I think I probably won't reup this year. No point in me carrying any longer if my heart's not in it. Years of packing has made me tired of carrying that uncomfortable thing around, and so I don't much any more.....see that's what "old" does.......never had one scare in 10 years.....knocking on wood.

GW,I understand your decision. My decision is primarily based on transportation with out worry about loaded or unloaded and separated, which the CCW allows. Some of the recent activities of the "general population" have encouraged the MP9 purchase though. In all(a big number) my years I have never felt threatened either but times are changing.

Well guys I just got my renewal today in the mail as I didn't have time to wait in the county sheriff's office on the 30th of June. Oh I I didn't have to go through the training that some of you had to. My oldest daughter got hers the other year and didn't own a hand gun at that time but now has a .380 Here in PA we are an open carry state but once you put a jacket on or step in your vehicle you have to have a license to carry concealed.

New Hamster doesn't require a permit for open or concealed carry. I still get the permit for reciprocity purposes, and as an indication when I'm away from home that my local police department doesn't think I'm totally bonkers. Think of those times there might be a minor problem with someone detecting the carry and panicking.

Hacker ~ Well done, always nice to have those things out of the way. Here in Arizona, we can renew on-line.
Pooh ~ Carry here in Northern AZ is so common that most people wouldn't say anything if they happen to notice. But it’s still nice to have the CCW, just in case.
Arizona is also a Constitutional Carry State (permit-less, open or concealed). Most of us get the CCW for reciprocity reasons as well as eliminating the need for background checks when purchasing a gun. The LGS’s like that, due to the reduction in paperwork.
