Went to the range today, one I had never been to before, to shoot the qualification for CCW. i had never shot my 1911 at these distances before so I was a bit apprehensive at first. The distancecs were 15 yds,7yds,4,2 and1 80% was the requirement body mass on a standard silhouette target. I'm proud of my shooting, after the 15yd flite I went to head shots and was 100% on the whole firing. I don't like bragging but I' m to happy not to, I was very pleasantly surprise as I mostly only shoot long guns.

Well a BIG CONGRATS there Bob well done indeed. When I get to the range for handgun I usually practice at the "Combat Line" which is 7 yards. I do shoot at 10 and some at the 15 and I don't shoot as often as I should at 25 yards. At 25 I hope to get as close as I can some type of center mass group. Again Bob well done!!!!

Give me a place to stand and a long-enough lever, and I will invariably break the lever.

Bob, isn't it great when you hit that groove ? It's sort of like four-wheel drift when driving. Someone should warn the bad guys that it's time to reform ! Congrats !

Well done sir. A question. Are you required to qualify with the firearm you will carry? My state does not. I have assisted at several classes and most qual with 22LR. Lead instructor offers rental .22s. Have seen a couple 9s and 38's. Nothing larger. One more question. In my state, Missouri, if I renew promptly, requal is not required. Must you requal at every renewal?

Mule, yes we have to shoot the firearm we intend to carry. I brought 3 guns the 1911 .45, M27 .357 and a K22 I shot the qualification with the 1911 as it is I could have used any of the guns, I just had to show knowledge and ability with the others 6 shots each they are considered qualified. As far as renewal in 2 yrs. I believe we have to shoot.

Bob. You've got the bases covered. I like a wheel gun. Allows ammo choices, 38 special, wad cutters, shot shells. Snakes and armadillos here. I am fortunate, Missouri is a Constitutional Carry state. A CCW is not required. However it does allow carry in some otherwise restricted locations, as well as reciprocity in many other states. if another state Will accept MO certification, MO will accept theirs. Got to know the regs when traveling. Neighbor Illinois is not very friendly. When you get comfortable, you might want to try ankle carry. Shoot Straight Shoot Often

Yeah Mule, I'm some what aware of reciprocity among the states and am planning to get Arizona's permit as it opens up a lot of doors. As far as ankle carry goes I'm too old for that, thanks for the thought though.

Good job! 1911 even. For the uninitiated they can be hard to shoot well. You obviously aren't in that category.

I used to carry a 1911 Kimber, but I got older and decided it was too uncomfortable. So I bought Kahr .40S&W and carried that for a year, but it was no 1911, not accurate at all. So I bought a Ruger SR40, and it was the most accurate pistol I ever shot. Don't know why....maybe it just fit me. But I didn't renew CCW two years ago. Just didn't carry much....felt too safe here....small town syndrome I guess. Things are changing everywhere now, so maybe I'll start again. New Mexico rules are simpler than some. Have to requalify every 4 years. and renew every 2 years. You can qualify with a wheel gun, or an automatic, or both. But you can't carry calibers bigger than what you qualify with. So I always qualified with my .45acp, AND my .357. that way I could carry anything .45 or .357, or smaller. Particular firearms they don't care about just caliber. Oh! there is one other "type" you can qualify with here....derringer! The last time I qualified, a guy in my group qualified with a derringer, pistol, and revolver. When he shot the derringer there was tears in his eyes....from the pain. But he did qualify.

GW, My plan is to get a M39 S&W 9mm. I want a double action, I'm not quite comfortable with the hammer cocked as the single actions require. Also I'm too old and ingrained to shoot plastic, aluminum is bad enough.
How did any of you feel about carrying with the hammer in the cocked position?

In 1965 I started working for Uncle Sam (USAF) and he taught that a 1911 was to be carried; magazine full, round chambered, hammer cocked, safety on . . . always ready . . . the way Mr. Browning intended . . . so to this day that's the way I carry.
When you get your Arizona CCW there is no qualifying involved nor is it firearm specific. All you need is documented safety training from any NRA Authorized instructor, within the last 90 days and two current fingerprint cards. Mail it all with a money-order to DPS in Phoenix. It's good for five years and can be renewed on-line within 90 days of expiration. If you let it expire you do have to go through the safety training and fingerprinting again.

By the way . . . no CCW is required for legal residents in good standing over 21 years of age to carry (open or concealed).

By the way . . . no CCW is required for legal residents in good standing over 21 years of age to carry (open or concealed). Yet.......the libs are doing their darnedist to take over NM and AZ. Praying normal folks see that before it's too late. I carried my Kimber cocked and locked and did fine. My Ruger SR40 is a striker fired pistol with a trigger safety AND a manual safety....it's easily my favorite pistol. Sooo accurate in my hands anyway. Guns fit people....and that one fits me best of all. The Kahr is a double action only with the shortest barrel, and is easily the hardest to hit anything with, in my hands. I also have a .357 Security Six revolver. I don't CC that one, but I do carry it unconcealed sometimes in the Colorado mountains, but not so much anymore as I don't hunt anymore.
