A friend of mine has found a gold mine of .45 ACP once fired at his local range, with the small primer pockets. He got curious, and is looking to load some of them. He checked with me, and anything I have showed no meaningful difference in performance. Does this raise any red flags with the crew, other than disturbing the ghost of John Moses Browning ?

Pooh ~ I came across a small cash of SSP 45ACP brass a couple of years ago (maybe a couple hundred rounds). I don't recall the specifics but remember that I ended up loading "mid range" reloads with no issues. They were just plinking loads and I inspected every thing as I was using them. No noticeable issues were found. Keeping the brass separate was a pain and a guy at the range traded 2 SSP brass for 1 LPP brass. I took hime up on it just to get rid of them. ~ Larry

The Ruger forum had some discussion about them and there were no flags raised that I recall other than having to keeping them separate and changing primer seating tools.

Yes guys SPPs are here to stay and have now been around over 10 years+ I think DanGun did a test on this when we were at the "Hub House" I think he found more consistency with the small. Oh and yes keeping the brass separate can be a pain. Also I'm seeing more rifle brass with both size rifle primers. Go to "Starline Brass" and you'll see various ones with both that you can order.

Thanks guys- My friend is a sensible loader, and isn't going to hot-rod anything without proper development. If he blows up, I'll let you know... I've collected some of the small pocket .45 acp but keep them off to their own special place until it's worth doing something with them.

My friend reported in:
I tried them today with 7 grs of Unique and a Lyman 452374 230 gr round nose cast of wheel weights and didn't see any difference than the same load in cases with large pistol primers in the S&W 2.0. Tomorrow I'l try them in my 11 A1.
Good to tuck away ! In the current climate, having the option of using small primers may keep things going.
