OK ... I am hoping this becomes a regular occurrence for me. That is; I hope that I can get the word out as to prices and stuff relating to the local gun show. So, I go off to the Crossroads of the West San Francisco gun show. Well ... it is not really in San Francisco. The show is in neighboring Daly City. I arrive at around opening time of 9:00am and the 1st thing I notice is that the lines are pretty much back to normal. What usually happens around here is that most folks arrive at the show near noon. I suppose most folks like to sleep in on the weekends unlike me. So, here is some of the stuff I did run into at the show: .22 LR ammo is now widely available. The stuff is still pricey however. The lowest prices I saw was around $60 / brick for the 'cheap' stuff. Heck ... I can get the decent, (SKJAGD) stuff on-line for about that price. I still have plenty of .22LR. I think I shall wait. The fact that the .22LR is widely available is good news! Primers of various types were going for about $27 / 1000 or about $130 / 5000. This is pretty close to pre-panic price levels. Before the panic of 2013, primers were going for $25 / 1000 or $121 / 5000. According to my 10% rule, the $27 / 1000 looks pretty close to the 'new normal' I saw some Reloder-15 there. Yaay! Even though I have plenty of powder, I decided to 'nab' the last lb. of the stuff. Reloder-15 was going for $30 / lb. I know this is a bit pricey. The pre-panic price on this stuff was around $25 / lb. According to my 10% rule ... I believe the new normal for this stuff to be in the $27 / lb range. I saw a fair amount of rifle powder there. I saw Varget, IMR4064, IMR4350, H4198, H414, H4895, Benchmark ... just to name a few. There were both 1 lb tubs and 8 lb kegs of the stuff for sale. The price for the 8 lb kegs were around $215. This is very close to where I expect the 'new normal' to be. The pre-panic prices were around $180/8lb keg. The 10% rule is $198 / 8lb keg. Since I have plenty of rifle powder, I did not buy any ... except for Reloder-15! There was also a fair quantity of pistol powder there. Most of it was Unique, Titegroup and Bullseye. I did not see any of my favorite stuff, (HP38) there. The pistol powder was going for around $24 / lb. This is still a bit pricey for me. The pre-panic prices I am used to is around $18 / lb. Needless to say, ALL of the pistol powder was gone within the 1st hour of the show. I did not see any estate sale kind of stuff there. I did see a vendor selling LED strip lighting systems for the gun safe. That reminds me ... I need to post a how-to for installing these things in the gun safe. It is very nice to have this new tech so I can see my firearms in my safe easily. The other thing I did was to go around to the various booths to purchase some odds and ends for my latest custom 1022 build. I did find and purchase an AimSport Multi-reticle Reflex Sight for $65 there. I go online when I get home, and I find that Optics Planet has the Exact Same Thing on sale, with free S&H for $49!!! I can say this much for certain ... Being able to see the reflex sight and play with it before the purchase was worth the extra money. At least, I did not pay MSRP for it. MSRP is $69. I mounted this thing on the custom 1022 that I just finished. I will post pics of this on the rifle thread later. I also purchased a 12-pack of .22lr action proving dummy rounds for about $12. This is pretty good considering that Amazon is selling these things for around $14.44. Needless to say, I loaded up a mag full of these things and tested the action on my new build. Everything seemed to cycle OK with these things. We shall see what happens with the live ammo out at the range later today. All in all, I did have a lot of fun attending the show. To me, the gun show is entertainment. I have gone to many gun shows and walked away happy and empty handed. I have also gotten taken advantage of at these venues ... but that is my fault for not doing my homework ... and sometimes getting the itchy finger on my wallet.

Good report Ken. I think I'll try to start doing the same thing for the Florida Gun Shows. That will give us an I idea of what the prices and availability of primers powders and bullets are from one end to the other. The other guys from other states could do the same it would be awesome.

Here is my report from today's show I attended. Well there were three going on this weekend here in PA. My son-in-law was never to one so we went to the one in Harrisburg and the prices were again a mix bag. Of course 22lrs were going for $60-$70 a brick of 500. The one vendor had the CCI 22s for $60 a 500ct brick and we got the same at Cabela's on special for $50 for TWO 500ct bricks several months ago. Powder was around the $25 to $30 per pound range. The 8lb kegs that I was able to see went around $175 to $185+ A 8lb keg of W748 went for $175. Primers were hanging around $35/1000 some vendors were below this as one was selling Win. and CCI for $32/1000 and the Mil. spec and BR primers were about $45/1000. We picked up a bag of Hornady 55gr .224 FMJBT for $55.
Ken by any chance did they have W231 powder at your show same as HP-38? (same powder)

A lot of reloaders know the difference, (none) between the two powders. Handgun powder, for some reason, is not so easy to find nowadays. It also appears as if you are getting better prices on powder; and I am seeing better prices on primers. Hopefully, it all equals out to better prices in general. I am OK with handgun powder ... now that I have a huge ton of that REX-2 on hand.

I went to a general auction tonight and there were some .22 lr shells there. There were 7 50 round boxes of Remington Thunderbolt and 2 50 round boxes of Winchester. They were all on the same tray so I'm thinking maybe $20-$25 would be a fair to high price if I could get them. Well when they put them up for bid the auctioneer stated that it would be the bid x9, 9 boxes of 50. The first bid started at $5 so I'm thinking I'm out and just sat back to watch. These crazy people chased it all the way to $11 a box. I sure hope the winner realized that it was x 9 or he was in for a surprise when he checked out. $99 for 450 .22lr rounds, crazy.
I don't know, maybe this should have been on the Humor Board.
I felt like a winner when I left with nothing tonight.

It's no wonder prices are where they are. As they say charge what they market will bare. With people willing to pay those prices, reasonable minds will not prevail. Oh and you were the winner of the night!

Dan, the sad thing is about 3-4 weeks ago Field & Stream opened a new store in Erie Pa, about an hour away from us, and that place was packed with .22 lr shells. My wife & I and our son each bought a brick of 525 Remington shells for $24.99 each. I know this was a Grand opening special for them so I do not know what they are selling for now but still tonight was just ridiculous.
Maybe I should send a brick to the auction next week. I might get enough for a new rifle. lol

JB, I could probably make allot of money selling all the bricks of .22lr I bought when the prices were reasonable. I never paid more than $25 a brick. In most cases I paid less when I would catch them on sale. When prices started going North of $25 I checked to see how much I had and realized that I had more than I will probably ever shot so I stopped buying. Notice I said probably but who knows, I may need more.

Haven't been to a gun show lately, but Sunday went to the big firearms store in the state, and have generally been around. I'm finding powder still spotty-particularly the standards. Primers seem to be available, and price has receded somewhat. .22 is still catch as catch can, but I'm seeing what shows up stay on the shelf just a bit longer-my local store got in several 100 round boxes of CCI, and they stayed for several days. (I didn't like the price.) I have to think things have to reach a saturation point. I feel fortunate to have enough tucked away for reasonable use for now. In any event, I think the thaw is on, but I'm not as optimistic as some posting. (And, I hope I'm wrong !!! )

A sign of my mental condition, I forgot about this forum. Saturday I went to the Vallejo gun show where things seemed normal no big lines for ammo components were pretty available and there was no huge line to get in. Pricing was still showing the vendors to be proud of their wares. Saturday night I attended an NRA dinner aboard the CVS12 USS Hornet had the chance to talk to James Porter, president NRA, he as you probably know is following in his father's footsteps. He is a very personable individual and fun to talk with, however the reason for his attendance was more serious to raise funds for the up coming senate race. The event was titled "Defend America" and a huge case was made for making any possible donation the the organization, and getting out and voting and getting friends and neighbors out to vote.

Well fellows, tomorrow July 26th & 27th is the Gun Show here in Miami. I called 4 weeks ago trying to reserve a table, but was put on a waiting list pending a cancelation. Apparently they are booked solid, since I never got a call back. Im going in the morning attempting to find some pistol powder. Last show, 2 months ago, there was none to be found. I will report on my findings (or lack off) in the next post. Next show is in August.

Hello everbody Well, I did attend the Miami Gun Show today. I arrived promptly at 9am and there were maybe 30 people in line. First issue, the admission price went from $10.00 to $12.00. I walked around the entire place and to my displeasure, was unable to find but one pound of 800X at a price of $50.00! Needless to say, I did not buy it. In the entire show(about 200 tables) only 1 vendor had maybe 15lbs of powder for sale. No Bullseye, Unique, Red Dot, Blue Dot or similar Pistol or Shotshell powder. There was plenty of ammo. $10.00/100 22LR seems to be the going rate. There were plenty of firearms, of course. On the positive side, IWI Tavor has gone down to around $1600.00 and WASR AK47 still at $599.00 with wooden furniture. 223, 556 & 7.62×39 ammo were pretty much available. No shortage there. ARs were going for about $700-800. Seems the prices of the firearms as a whole is starting to come down to normal levels. Needless to say, I did not buy anything. Maybe in August there might be more powder availablity.

Lex, The 22lr is still at the gouging price. That 10/100 equals out to $50 for a 500 round brick. One can do better at a place like Cabela's when they run a sale. That $50 for a pound of powder is out of sight. Hell for that price I can get two at the local shops. I would had inquired what for drugs the vendor was on for the high price so he can afford his habit.

I will be heading on over to The Vallejo Gunshow tomorrow. I plan on arriving there at around 9:30 in the morning. Most likely, I will be heading on out at around noon or thereabouts. The city of Vallejo is about a 1.5 hour drive for me. I will post my findings later in the weekend after I get back.

Ken, I'll be going to one this weekend in Harrisburg, Pa. The son-in-law wants to go and I contacted my hunting buddy so we will go on Sunday to see if we can get some components or anything else related. I'll also post what I find and see from this show.

I just got back from the Vallejo gun show. Here are some of the things I saw.
There appeared to be fewer vendors here than at other times. I think the general thaw is showing to take effect. The crowds were down and the parking appeared to be down to more normal gunshow levels.
I saw a whole slew of AR and AR accessories. As usual, the AR tables were full of stuff and full of people looking.
Component prices have seemed to stabilize. I managed to snag a lb of Reloder-15 for around $28. This comes out to about $30 after sales tax which is not too bad. Fortunately, I managed to snag the last pound of the Reloder-15 that was available. Primers were in pretty good supply. While not at the pre-panic levels ... $28/1000 is not too bad. It was $22/1000 before the panic. I did not purchase any primers since I already have a pretty decent amount already.
Center fire ammo has come dramatically down in prices! I saw crates of .223/5.56 for sale at around $320/1000. This is very close to the pre-panic levels of around $310/1000 or thereabouts. However ... .22LR is still pretty darned pricey. I saw bricks of the .22LR going for around $50 to $60 / brick. This is definitely lower than the $60-$85/brick I saw a few months ago at the last gun show. There is definitely a trend of the .22LR prices going down. There was a vendor there selling only .22LR ammo. They were selling Remington T-bolts and CCI blazer for around $75/brick. There were very few people going to their table. Later in the show, I saw them slash the prices to around $65/brick ... still it did not attract any crowds ... I mean ... why would I purchase the cheap stuff for the same price as the Eley Club or SKJAGD-standard at MidwayUSA?
Anyhow ... as always ... I had a great time at the show. I do not care if people tell me that California gun shows are a rip and that they do not have as big a venue as in Nevada or Arizona ...
I still like going to them. Maybe one day, I will take the long drive to Nevada and go to the big one in Reno.

Ken, The primer prices are very decent aroud here in the shops still going for $31 to $35/1000. For the 22lr they are not going to sell when you have Cabel's when they have a sale and can get two 500 round bricks for $51-$52.

OK I'm late with my report from the gun show this Sun. 9-6-14 been busy with things. The show for a Sunday was not packed but a good crowd non the less. Primers at this show were high at $38 to $40/1000 can do better at my local guy. Powder was running at $160 to $195 for 8lbs the one pounds were $25 to $30+ again my local guy is better. Yes 22lr still outrageous $75 for a brick. I look at them and laughed at the people and left. Did find some decent prices on items. Came across an AR complete upper in %.556 for around $380. My son-in-law and myself were looking for components and my daughter was looking for a revolver (she likes shooting my38) or a small 9mm. Alex want some 20 round mags for his Ar and we some new metal ones for $8 a piece. He wanted plastic (polymer) one but for the price he got three. He is picking up a Savage in 308 Win. in a couple weeks and got some once fired Lake City brass at $18.95/50 I thought that was a fair price. Picked up some Montana Gold 38/357 125 grain JHP for $62/500. These were for me for my 357 mag. The best item he got for me was a 4 1/2" dia. 2X flexible neck standing magnifier. This is to aid in inspecting brass. This thing is great for such purpose. The next shoe is at the end of Sept. and up the road and hope to get to that one to see if any price difference from this one.

I just got back from the San Francisco Gun Show. Yes, there is such a thing as the SF Gun show. Really ... it should be called the Daly City Cow Palace Gun show. SF seems to preempt a lot of things here in the greater SF Bay Area.
There were numerous vendors there. The crowds are all now down to much more normal pre-panic levels. I do not go to the shows to really save money. I consider the gas, parking and entry fees all as a part of an entertainment expense. For me; going to the gun show is about entertainment. I have gone to quite a few and came away happy and empty-handed. I would much rather spend $27.50 for gas, parking and entry fees than for a HAZMAT + shipping charge!
Of course there is the usual ZAP! sound of someone demonstrating a Taser or zap gun. There are the tables of cheap jewelry and preserved meat products. I went and bee-lined it to the reloading component vendors. The lines were much lower this time than during the panic. I was finding the following to be my general experience.
1. Of the best deals were the primers! I saw large rifle, large pistol going for $22/1000 or $110/5000! These prices were much better than the pre-panic $25/1000 prices. I went and snapped up a case, (5000) of the large pistol primers.
2. The small rifle and small pistol primers were going for around $20/1000 or $100/5000. These were Winchester and CCI primers. These are pretty darned good prices. I talked to the vendors and they tell me that primers are back in a big way.
3. Rifle powder was in very good supply. I saw, Reloder-15, Reloder-17, Reloder-22, H414, W760, Varget, IMR4350, AR COMP, IMR4064 and a bunch of other rifle powders both in both 1lb and 8lb kegs. The 1lb tubs were going for around $24/lb. The 8lb kegs were going for $190/keg. While not quite at the pre-panic levels... These prices are still pretty good ... especially if you consider HAZMAT and shipping and such.
4. There is PISTOL POWDER for sale there! Now this stuff was going for $27/lb or around $216 per 8lb keg. I saw ... HP38, W231, Titegroup, WSF, Bullseye and Unique. All of the 8lb kegs were sold out in the 1st 30 minutes. Almost all of the 1lb tubs were sold out in the 1st hour. The last to sell was the WSF. I believe not too many folks know how good WSF is for as a medium burn pistol powder. Eventually, all the tubs of the WSF were sold out too. At least there was this stuff available ... for the 1st time in a long time!
5. The lines for ammo were very modest and reasonable. I would say the main vendor, (The Miwall corporation), usually has the longest lines. This time, the line for the Miwall booth was around 30 minutes. This is not bad at all.
6. There were lots of .223, 9mm, .38spl, .357 and .40 S&W ammo available. I saw crates of this stuff everywhere. I saw FMJ .223 ammo going for $275/1000. This is an excellent price. This price is even lower than the pre-panic prices of around $320/1000 I saw in 2012 or thereabouts. There were also large crates of 9mm going for around $175/1000. This is an exceptionally good price for this stuff. I saw crates of 230 grain .45 ACP ball ammo going for around $275/1000. All of these prices looked very good.
7. I saw this booth hawking this stuff called Cherry Palms ... or something ... it looked like red lipstick gun-goo grease. The fellow manning the booth looked like a snake-oil salesman. To tell you the truth I love seeing booths like this. It reminds me of those fellows selling all kinds of emetics, liniments, purgatives, hair restoration and other such stuff at the county fair!
8. I saw a very rare species of ammo over at the gun show. I saw the 100 ct plastic boxes of 40 grain CCI minimag .22LR ammo! I did not buy any of the stuff. The fellow wanted $18/100. This comes out to $90/brick. At these prices I can purchase Eley Club or the SKJAGD or Wolf match ... I mean CCI minimag is good stuff, but it is not as good as the Eley, SKJAGD or Wolf!
9. The lowest prices I saw for .22LR was around $50 / brick for Remington golden bullets. This is still too pricey in my book.
10. I saw quite a few vendors selling .22LR ammo at the gun show. The prices were ranging from $50 to $110 per brick. The average price was about $60-$75 / brick. I saw a fellow selling CCI Blazer .22LR for around $75 / brick ... I mean really? I saw other folks selling Remington T-bolts for around $80 / brick ... needless to say ... I came back, and the stuff was still there. I mean ... why buy this stuff, when you can get decent 9mm for almost the same price? And if you reload ... the 9mm is cheaper than the .22LR.
I had a very good time at the gun show. I fully expect to see availability of all things guns go way up and the prices to continue to keep coming down ... even here in anti-gun California!

Hi Ken- nice report. I am particularly interested in your comments regarding .22LR. It looks like the scalpers may get stuck with some high-priced inventory, as the market saturates. (Perhaps they and their children will become excellent marksmen while shooting off the inventory ! ;-) ) Thanks !

(Perhaps they and their children will become excellent marksmen while shooting off the inventory ! ;-) ) Thanks ! Hello Pooh; Yes ... the scalpers will get stuck ... as they always do. From what I can tell ... the distributors, (except Walmart and their ilk), all did the right thing and did raise the prices to reflect demand. I am very pleased to see that the large distributors, (such as MidwayUSA, Grafs, Miwall etc), did raise the prices of the .22LR ammunition. This, in turn, did put the squeeze on the scalpers. What the scalpers did in turn was to squeeze the common folk. The common folk are the ones who rely on the local large box retail, (such as Walmart, and such) as their main source of supply. The scalpers took that source of supply away from main stream America ... which just galls me. Now, the Walmart did ration ammo ... that is good too. What this did was to help alleviate some of the supply issues by making the Scalpers really work for their supply ... (getting all their friends and relatives involved...) The scalpers will get scalped ... They always do!

Ken, I'm sure that neither of us begrudges someone making a buck, and I honestly can't say the scalpers did anything illegal. Ethics is another thing, and it would appear they stayed in the market just a touch too long.
There were some good responses in the industry. Federal and others set aside an allocation for Scouting and 4-H programs-many of those kids never shoot again, but they've had a positive exposure to shooting, and that makes it harder to make shooting a negarive thing. Walmart was, I think mixed. Whatever got to the rack was rationed, which makes some sense, but...there's a lot of anecdotal evidence that employees were either actively buying it up or tipping off the scalpers.

Ken, Very good prices indeed. Wish those prices find their way East to here. It has been a long time since I saw prices like that for primers. Yes those with the 22lr ammo are going to choke on them. When everything catches up with demand the price for 22lr will come down but until then they can sit unless I find a sale like Cabela's had a while back I'll buy then.

I'm totally jealous you guys! I just got home from Grand House, Arizona(Casa Grande). My wife picked the wrong week for a "necessary" visit to my daughter there......Sigh.....missed the local gun show here...again!.....I missed the one in January too. I don't get it.....I think she's planning important things to go to on purpose on gun show weekends. If these are plots to save money, they don't work......the price of gas makes sure of that. Worst of it was that I was an hour away from a gun show in Tucson and couldn't leave......not that I resent family coming first, I just hate that the timing always seems to interfere....nuts! There's another in Albuquerque on Oct 3rd.....hmmmmm...only 3 hours away....and the wife loves to shop the mauls (spelling intentional).

For the first time, I attended the Ft Lauderdale Gun & Knife show as a vendor. I set a display with my Damascus knives and sold about a dozen pieces in the two day event. I did arrive at 8:30 am on Saturday and was able to browse through the tables before the general public was admitted, so I had an opportunity to check out the merc handise for sale. 22s are now fairly common and prices were about what everybody has them for elsewhere. Ammunition of all types were also commonly available. Bags of brass in the most common calibers were also being offered. No 32acp or 380. Primers were also fairly available. Tula went for $25.00/1000. Powders, same old story. Some rifle but no pistol powder of any kind. Im going to be attending again on Nov 6, so I will report on that one then.
