For some time now I've noticed in adds and in general photos that people are shoulder carrying long arms with the muzzle forward and of course downward. I feel this is very dangerous because if you trip or even fall the muzzle is either going to be reflexively swung to the side and out of control or into the ground. My preferred and taught way of shoulder carry is butt forward and downward. I know it looks cool with a side by side or O.U. to be carried broken this way. What are your feelings toward this?

Bob this way of carry is not new. The British during like the Boer Wars. Their rifles had three sling attachment points. Of course the one on the butt and two forward as the one was used to carry forward muzzle down so it could be deployed and shoulder with out taking the rifle of the shoulder. How long this way was used I'm not sure with out doing some research.

Bob ~ I am with you and have often thought the same. This should be interesting; I look forward to hearing what others have to say on this.

Hacker, I knew that it was not a new method of carry but it has recently (last several years) shown up, primarily in adds, with both bolt rifles and pump shotguns. What do you think of it? I know with the broken shotgun over the shoulder it may depict an unloaded gun finished for the hunt.

Give me a place to stand and a long-enough lever, and I will invariably break the lever.

Bob, I'm with you. Of course, I think that ideally, we'd have two hands on the rifle, and one on our wallet... I'm inclined to cut the guys with the 2x barrels some slack with over the shoulder as long as the gun is unambiguously broken. (Even then, I think it's an affectation.) I would note that at a Hunter Ed class in the last year or so, we were at a state facility. In doing the field exam, one student had the 2x broken over his shoulder as they approached the end point. A Mucky-Muck from Fish and Game pounced on the guy. I think intervention should have been cautionary rather than disciplinary. He wasn't in the group I was taking around, so I didn't intervene, and the guy was certified. In any event, I think there are conflicting views. Trap guys have always done odd stuff-I remember them having flaps to lace on their shoes so they could rest the muzzle of their guns on their shoetop. There are things Mother Pooh's next to youngest son won't do, and that is certainly one of them !
