I don't know how closely you've followed the story about the tourists from the US who had left live ammunition in their luggage when visiting the Turks and Caicos islands. They were facing a mandatory 12 year sentence. It looks like those cases are settling out either on a suspended sentence or time served plus a fine in the mid to high four figures. On the one hand, they probably have gotten some pressure to back off, or figured they'd made their point. (Yes, I think it's Draconian, but they can run their silly island the way they want. I just won't be there.)
Now, the question is, what is stray ammunition doing rattling around in a travel bag ? On some level, we can all goof, but we are dealing with something that is potentially dangerous-hey, we keep it out of the reach of children, right ? So, how much sympathy do we extend to these folks ? I'm interested in your(individual and collective) perspective.

Ok here's one school of thought. They went some place here and did it by POV and had firearms and ammo and when done got home and did not look over their luggage and had some loose that got out. Point is when going abroad be sure to check for things that could get you in trouble.

In some cases pictures speak volumes or in this case volume speaks terms. A few cartridges is one thing more than a few is either stupid or with intent, in either case they have to deal with the consequences. Given today's political tenor on a global scale, especially in that portion of the world maybe the Turks are just being careful and letting the action rule the punishment.

Many many moons ago I was a repair guy and worked for a company who maintained laundromats. On one occasion I had to replace a washing machine pump because a live 38 Special round was jammed in between the impeller and housing. Seems that people arn't always aware of what they are doing with "Loose Ammo".

One will get away from you once in a while. The ones that really open my eyes are the folks that forgot they had a gun in their bag. Am I getting grumpy in my old age ?
Somehow this brings to mind when one of the local cops pulled me over because I had a tail light out. He approached the car and shone the light in. The beam fell on the cup holder, which was filled with some .357 brass I'd scrounged at the range. He later told of being alarmed, and then he looked over, and said he was relieved-"Oh, it's just Jim".

In my former life, I traveled weekly by car. It was not uncommon to have a firearm for after hours recreation, business related sporting clays events, an occasional hunt and bedside security. While uncommon, a loose round in the luggage was not unheard of. The traveler learned the hard way to pay attention to the details.
