Far from serious gunsmith work, however I wanted to share my little project.
I had been researching grip enhancement possibilities for several guns. I thought I had settled on either grip tape from Talon Grips or Powder River Precision. I never could get myself to pull the trigger though. I had a nagging feeling that it wouldn't last very well and that I really wouldn't be all that impressed. With the guns I wanted to do it was going to be $200 +/- for all the grip tape. When I went to send my XDs's back a few months ago my buddy that runs one of the LGS's I frequent was excited to show off his XDs that he'd just stippled. I really liked it on a quick examination and ask him about doing mine. He said he usually gets $100 to do one through the shop but if I'd let him take mine home and not be in a big rush he'd do it for $50. At that point, even if he wanted to do them all for that rate, this becomes more like a $500+ project. That's getting into buying another gun territory!!!
Anyway, I started researching stippling and found out it was done entirely different than I had guessed. I guess maybe I'm not real sharp, but I thought people were beating the hell out of the guns with some kind of sharp tools designed to create different patterns. Seemed like a bad idea to me so I never really considered it. So, armed with my new found knowledge I jumped in with both feet and this is what I came up with:
First two are of my SA XDm 5.25 in 9mm:
Closer pic of the grip detail:
These last two are the XDm 5.25 Competition in .45 ACP:
I missed the surface inside the "XD" on this side. I noticed it when I was taking the pics and went back and got it though:
These feel amazing to me. I was very pleased with how they came out and it won't be something I'm constantly having to worry about coming off. I've ran 500+ rounds through the 9mm in an afternoon and it has never been irritating to my hands or anything. It really seems to make a difference on controlling the gun for quicker follow-ups etc...
I haven't started on any of the other guns I have plans for yet. Still doing a little research on them and trying to decide just how I want to go about it. If anyone has stippled their XDs or Kahr, especially a PM9, I'd be interested in seeing pics of your efforts.
