I first got my introduction into reloading on my grandpa's Mec presses. We loaded many a 12, 16 and even a few 10 gauge over the years. Now I have simplified my shotty's and only have 12 gauges. I do load some nice waterfowl loads for a few friends (I never took up duck hunting.). I also load a lot of 00 buck for my self and a few friends for varmint control around the farms. With current prices of components I find that I shoot cheap walmart target loads at the range and haven't noticed my scores suffer much if at all. I do feel that my target loads pattern better and are in general much better quality, but have stopped loading them due to time and increased cost. (Sometime cut open a Walmart Remington shot shell and see what's inside, lead shot in multiple sizes and very low bhn). What do you guys load for, just for curiosity's sake? Am I the only one that still loads for 12 gauge?

You’re not the only one that still reloads shot-shells as I still do also for the 12. At the moment I only load lead for hunting other than Water Fowl. I’ll stack my home loads against store bought anytime for overall performance for hunting. If there is still nickel coated lead shot available that is my first choice even though a little more expensive to purchase.

Well first off you don't have in your poll loading for upland and small game. This is what I load for and I load for 20, 16, and the 12ga. As for the shot I use magnum lead and also copper plated and in my turkey loads the nickle plated. I use shot sizes from #7 to #4 as in my state of PA. the #4 is the largest to use for this type of hunting. If one wishes to use steel then the #2 is the largest to use for this type of hunting.

I am loading 12 and 20 gauge. Primarily for clay bird shooting. I use the same ammo for bird hunting.
I reload because I enjoy it. Like many reloaders, I am a dumpster diving, wheel weight stealing scrounger. I began reducing payloads to stretch my shot supply. Dropping to one ounce didn't hurt my scores. Going to 7/8 ounce improved my skeet and 16 yard trap scores. I now shoot 7/8 for trap and 3/4 ounce for skeet. I am shooting 3/4 ounce in both 12 and 20 gauge. I have toyed with 1/2 ounce 12 and 20 gauge target loads. 800 reloads from a bag of shot really gets my attention, but the jury is still out on that one. I will also use reclaimed shot when I can find it. I am shooting for fun, not money or scholarships. A lost bird usually isn't a tragedy. I find reclaimed to be good for all skeet shooting and 16 to 20 yard trap.
Being able to build ammo I can't purchase commercially is also a driving factor. Light shot loads significantly reduce recoil. When working with new shooters, particularly women and children, they seem to stay with it for a few more targets if they are not getting the snot kicked out of them by harder hitting promotional ammo.
Rather than gear up to load non-toxic shot, I choose to buy the two or three boxes I use each year for waterfowl.
Just like metallic cartridge reloading, shot shell reloading is an enjoyable expansion of my shooting sports hobby.

I would love to reload shot shells but this financially seen over here (in the Netherlands) not smart. Plus I can't get/buy enough components to make just a few hundred. I have to import wads, shells, shot and primers from Germany or even the US. Than if I would have enough primers and powder than I break several gun laws. It's a pain in the butt. I would love to reload them but it's simply not possible.
At this time I buy top class Winchester (= Fiocchi Italy/RC4) AANL127 competition 12ga ammo for less than €0,25 ($0.34) per round! For hunting I use German (Rottweil) or Winchester/Remington steel shot ammo. For just a couple shots out in the field per year I don't care that much how much they cost. Plus most gun stores do have them on sale all year around like those from Gamebore or Eley, about 2 months ago I bought them for €0,14 per round!
I do reload black powder 12ga shells with a Lee Loader set (remeber my former topic at the RCBS hub). But those are just a handfull a year.

I just don't shoot enough small shot to justify loading, although I've got a couple of lee load-alls, and a bunch of components. My first handloading was for 12ga with a lee loader-one at a time by the numbers. A couple of years ago, I got one of the lee slug molds and have used various combinations of existing tooling to do that. If I were to get into trap or sporting clays, I'd be back at it in a heartbeat, however.

I just don't. I find it hard to pick up hulls when duck hunting or pheasant hunting maybe if I shot more trap or skeet or sporting clays I might be inclined to reload. One problem is I started shooting when shells were $2.00 -$2.50 a box which seemed affordable however in todays money that would equate to $25.00- $30.00 a box.

I guess I still technically load my shotgun shells. I don't use many any more, however still have all the gear and many components from when I shot sporting clays leagues many moons ago. What little shooting I've done the last few years has been pulled from old stock loaded up before I knew I wasn't going to be competing anymore. Used to run at least 500 rds. a week between practice rounds and shooting for league scoring, sometimes closer to 1000.
Not sure how well you'd fair loading them strictly for dollar reasons nowadays. I do buy field loads for hunting for the most part, but again don't use many.

I still do, and I wonder if the universal charge bar for a Mec (super 600) is worth getting, what are ya'lls comments on it, I'm open of options.

merdoc357,
I find a adjustable charge bar to be a plus. The powder manufactures do try to make each lot of powder as consistent as possible but there is differences from lot to lot. Example you have powder bushing A that is supposed to drop 17.3 grains of powder blue and it does so but down the line it drops the same brand but a newer lot at 17.8 grains. and let's say the 17.3 is a max load but now the newer lot is now over a max load. With the adjustable bar you can adjust to that 17.3 load. Of course this is wher a good scale comes in handy.

There was a similar thread a while back-it was either Greg or Bob, who referred to the "Walmart Progressive". I still chuckle about that one !

Hey Guys; it’s therapy, plain and simple. I used to reload to shoot . . . now I shoot to reload. There are days when ”stuff” is really getting to me and my lovely wife simply sends me to my room to reload. I don’t shoot much shotgun these days but that has little to do with why I might reload. IF I COULD JUST GET MEDICARE TO COVER THE COST OF THIS THERAPY . . .

This thread has been quiet for a while and how things have changed. Due to surgery and stroke didn't shoot or load for over five years. Started shooting five stand. Running out of components. Holy Smokes. Need a home equity loan to buy components, if you can find them. New meaning to the Good old days.

Thanks Bob. Not being facetious, the priest was on standby. Feeling good and holding my own. Hope to be more active here. Clays score sucks.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Things improved a little yesterday. Found a partial jug of Promo under the bench. Also found some 12 ga 1/2 and 3/4 oz wads. Intentionally used them for light, intro to shotgun ammo for kids and beginners. Occasionally in the past I was able to find affordable reclaimed shot. Has anyone seen any lately? Thanks again
