Ok so I am being dragged kicking and screaming into this purchase. Over at our now void old home I told about being run off a piece of property by a large group (sic PACK) of coyotes. Well it has happened again this time in my own back yard. We have been hearing song dogs for a long time up were we live and to be honest with all the timber land around us just never really paid much attention to them. Last night my wife and I took her four wheeler out for and evening ride ( ) and watched as a group of 7 coyotes took down a full grown buck deer in our headlights. Followed by the arrival of another 5 smaller coyotes. I was tempted to run home and grab my 11-87 and come back and raise hell with them till we backed of and listened to the sheer volume of yips, yipes, and calling in our general area. So I finally as much as I hate to admit it am leaning toward getting an AR platform with a high cap mag or 2 for things like this. So I am looking for something already done I will not build one that is in the $900-1300 range minus optics looking for suggestions. It doesn't need all the bells and whistles just needs to be accurate..... I really can't believe I am looking for one of these but after the last experience the time has come for one......

It is a good time to be in the market for an AR. The feeding frenzy seems to have died down and summers are generally a slow time at gun shops. Some folks that jumped in are now finding the AR is not to their liking. Lightly used guns are showing up on the market. Keep an eye on local for sales boards.
I prefer flattops. I have one set up with a nice scope for long range work and another with a red dot for close encounters. The beauty of the AR platform is that it can be tweaked to suit your personal taste.
One warning. Can be addictive. You can't own just one!

Chuck: Why not a Ruger Mini 30 or Ranch rifle ? You get the handy rifle with the high cap. magazine with out the stigma of the AR platform MSR !

Good advice from Bob. My wife prefers her mini-14. She can't get comfortable with the AR. Light and handy. Maybe not quite as accurate as the AR but good enough to take down yotes, groundhogs and whitetails.

Bob I am going to look at one of those later today I didn't give that much thought. Mule I can own only one I am not a fan of the AR in any way shape or form. This will be for the sole purpose of thinning out the coyotes on our property. Also unless I know the prior owner and his gun cleaning and how the gun was taken care of I really try to stay clear of used firearms had a bad taste left in my mouth once I won't have it again

Chuck, Congrats on the buy. Ruger's Mini's are a good rifle. My hunting buddy has one a Mini 14 in SS and in .223 His is accurate but can be improved on with the right load. I think you will like the Mini once you get to the range with it. Please let us know how things work out on this.

The one pictured is really old as these rifles go. Talking about screaming.....Stainless and the wood stock just flat scream for a shooter.buyer! I gave it to my son for Christmas a few months ago. I replaced it with another Ruger....the 556. If I see the right rifle/deal I'll be getting another Mini. (thinner cans are not stored there....just pulled and dropped whereever was out of the way) Gorgeous rifle....no kick, just screaming fun.

Yeah! They don't know......I coulda said something like.......see those cans? Those are the ones Dangun left me in the driveway to use at my next back in the hills shoot....you know the ones with black powder poured and sealed in small Christmas balls except for the fuse. and then filled half way up with gasoline! Oops, I wasn't supposed to tell was I?! What fine targets they make at 300 yards. Now for the real disclaimer! I'm pullin your leg big time! Don't going out and try that at home (or at the range....imagine how the range master would react.) Or in the woods.....you'll start another 1000acre fire....well yeah....even here in Dry Gulch New Mexico. That reminds me of a funny and scary story that happened to my sister's boy. I'll relate it up in General since this is way !

Chuck took my own advice to you and got my concession to the MSR craze, a Mini 14 .223 which I got to shoot today and I will say it was fun. I don't have to post a picture as Greg already has. I also got the ventilated metal hand guard for when I want to go bang rapidly and lots.

Nice Resurrection Bob! A fun thread. My son is loving his freeby. I'm not so much loving my Ruger 556. Not that it isn't accurate, super duper dependable, and fun to shoot, it's just feels like shooting a heavy pipe with uncomfortable stuff screwed to it everywhere.
Nothing beats the Mini 14 for a light, feel good, gorgeous rifle that makes you want to go back to town to get more ammo after shooting 180 round already! And that's not exaggerating.
I'm looking for another, what can I say, I miss it.
Been wondering how the coyote problem came out, 7mm!

GWS, Is that the Ruger SR556? I have been wanting one of those for a long time now. Every time I get .50 cents in the bank, the IRS takes $2.51 away from me. I might be interested if the price was right. I have a Windham SRC, no complaints with it & I will probably keep it. It is just a Ruger thing for me! Every time I close the safe I can hear my Rugers picking on (what I call them the orphans) The Windham and the H&R .32, that was my Grandads (they are outnumbered 11 to 1).

isparky44.....I have the same Ruger addition......that's why I have one, and a 10-22, SR-40, 22-45 target pistol, and a Security-Six. I'm trying to like this one.....it's an awesome shooter, it's just the AR platform....uncomfortable & heavy in old hands. It's only 8 months old, so I have to give it a better chance than that. Not ready to sell it, sorry.....I just want a new Mini 14 again. I wanted to give my youngest a rifle...that was important, I thought the AR could fill the void. Not quite.
The only gun I had that got stolen from me was one of my all time favorites, a Ruger Blackhawk .45 convertible with a 7"(or 7.5", can't remember) barrel, Sold for drug money by one of my relatives, no less. My home has become a safe since then. Boy, that was hard to get over....those are hard to replace. I trust nobody now.

Sparky, If you want your Rugers to stop bullying your other guns do as I did I just bought more Winchesters. Actually in my case it was the Winchesters doing the bullying

I only have 1 Winchester....it feels....lonely. Model 1894 made in 1919 thereabouts. My Grandfather's ranch gun recently keepsake restored , to keep collectors away. Family heirloom forever. Modern Winchesters are Japanese? Isn't there a law against that? I happened to be in the San Francisco area one October 31st, maybe 20 years ago. Somebody said I ought to go to the halloween bash at the Winchester House......I did. That was very interesting.....she was different. It was fun. I do have Kimbers and Remingtons and even a Kahr. I like Colts, but I no longer own any.

My most recent Winchester model 70s are both Made in the U.S.A. My .300 Super Grade is a late New Haven rifle and my .325 WSM is a North Carolina rifle, the rest are all pre '64 models. Not sure about some of the others. I know the 101 never was made in the U.S. and not sure about the rest of the shotguns.
