In our life time all of us have done something dumb that makes us really wonder what our gene pool is made of. Or we may question our sanity at the time.
Going back about a decade my deer hunting partner who I will call Pete set out to replace a deer blind destroyed by a farmer’s backhoe. It was situated about 150yds from a bush along a fence row that had an intersecting point with another fence row of spruce trees. This was a hot spot for intersecting deer when they traveled through the farm. We were not ready to give up such a spot and were insistent on rebuilding it.
The day we choose for the rebuild was a nice sunny day with some intermittent clouds. Basically a perfect day until a few hours later when it really got cloudy and a rain storm appeared. I mean it came down in buckets. All we could do was quickly tuck ourselves under a tree and with the aid of a small tarp that we were going to install in the roof of the blind. We literally got soaked to the a$$ from the down pour.
To make matters worse lightning and thunder also accompanied this storm shortly after it started. For some reason I had a quick look around and realizing we were in a perilous situation I immediately got Pete’s attention telling him we had to move quickly to another location. At first he gave me a funny look and stated this was the best location for protection from the rain. I commented, yeah but not from lightning. He took a quick look around and as I realized so did he we were under the tallest tree in the area. Hey lightning usually follows the shortest path to ground.
Talk about a quick 2-man shuffle trying to hold the tarp over our heads as we moved to another spot at least 100yds away from our previous location.
About a half hour later the rain stop and the sun appeared. Okay here we are with water saturated clothing deciding what to do next. We used Pet’s new truck to travel to this farm location and no way were we going to climb into the truck with our wet clothing. Well the only thing we could really do was remove our garments and wring as much water out of them as we could. I imagine if someone came by they would have had a sight to behold.
We then slipped our clothes back on and continued our rebuild until our clothes dried some. After a few more hours we were done and the clothes were only slightly damp because it got hot when the sun came. I can honestly say working in wet clothes isn’t very comfortable.
Pete and I laugh at our adventure of the blind rebuild but neither one of us could ever decide which gene pool we originated from. I guess some mysteries never get solved.
We can honestly admit as to what the state of our sanity is.
