we will be taking approximately 15 does from our lease this year. i will be using my ar15 .223. i know a lot of hunters think the 22 caliber is not enough gun for deer......i want to avoid that discussion and ask for opinions on bullets instead. our does will average 120 pounds, all shots will be less than 100 yard over green fields. i have loaded 60 grain nosler partition and 62 grain barnes tsx. both are loaded to 2900fps [approx] and give moa accuracy. opinions?

Well shot placement will be key here. Either of those bullets with proper placement should drill the boiler room. I would op for a heavier bullet if your twist rate can handle it. Fro the deep penetrating shot I think the Barnes will shine better. this is my opinion.

I have seen my nephew use the 60gr Partition on deer out to 200yds. As long as that bullet hits the vitals you have meat in the freezer. I have personally never seen the Barnes used here so I have nothing to report on that. A bullet I loaded last year for a youth hunt that also works quite well is the 64gr Nosler Bonded Performance. I witnessed 3 deer taken with this bullet at ranges from 20-137yds all three were bang flops 2 neck shots and a head shot.

thanks guys. my rifle has 1 in 9 twist so heavier bullets are probably not an option. i would prefer the barnes 70 grainer but they say 1 in 8 required. din't know about the nosler....maybe give them a look. i don't have any experience (none of my hunting friends either}with barnes...only going by what they say and what i have read. anyway thanks for the reply.

You should be good to go. I have killed a deer with the .22 Hornet 45gr Sierra Hornet bullet at about 2,500 fps. less than 100 yds. dropped on the spot. This was a depradation tag some what close to homes. And yes I did have a large safe zone behind the deer! It is all about shot placement, head or upper neck would be my choice and NO moving targets. Good Luck,Have Fun, and Be SAFE!

Skipper I have never had any complaints about any Partition bullet and have used them for 22-33 calibers. The 22 caliber at the velocity you mentioned is fine but shot placement is key. All the deer my nephew shot with them (6) we stationary. He either shot the boiler room outside of 100 yds (4) or the neck in closer (2). The reason for that is an easy to understand target size. The newer 64gr Bonded Nosler is really nothing more than a flat based Accubond without the poly tip. Which will stabilize in a standard twist 223, 22-250 (what I loaded them in), 220 Swift etc. so your twist rate is fine for that bullet.

update received my bullets today. i hope these noslers shoot better than they look! at $40 per hundred, they are not cheap.....but they look terrible. the jacket of every bullet is highly discolored. some in small areas around the tip and others have half the bullet discolored. they look like they have been laying in black dye. i have loaded thousands of ballistic tip and varmegeddon noslers and have been 100% satisfied. these would barely grade as "2nds" for appearance. will start loading this weekend. i notified nosler and midway usa of this problem

Skipper I notice that too but didn't think much of it. I have zero complaints about the performance of those bullets. They shot well in the 22 caliber guns I tried them in. I am going to work on them for the Ruger mini I bought when I get the time to.

update, did live chat with midway. they asked if i wanted to return to noslers. i said no...this corespondence was only to let them know about the quality problem. they said they would refer it to the people who deal with suppliers. quick response and what i call acceptable customer survice.
nosler, on the other hand has not even bothered to acknowledge that i contacted them
i tossed the box of bullets(101 of them}in my tumbler with new corncob. after 2 hours, they looked like a million dollars. all the surfaces were brilliant with no indication they had ever been tarnished. i have no doubt that they will perform great just like all the nosler bullets i have used in the past. i reread page 23 of my new nosler no. 7 manual that said " any bullet with cosmetic blemishes will be sold as blems". lol can't say to much about their customer service but i will continue to use their product anyway..i believe they are very good. will statrt load workup this weekend.

update my m&p ar15 really likes this bullet. got +/- moa with several combos of varget and cfe223. settled on: 24.8 grs cfe223 with col 2.180. this load was very accurate and didn't beat up my rifle. no chrono, but best guess is 2725 fts with 1080 foot lbs energy. 18" sporter barrel. confident it will get the job done.
