Not trying to start a SHTF thread or a pissing for distance contest, but as the title states how many primers, powder and bullets do you guys keep on hand? After living through the Great Primer Scare a few years ago I vowed I would never run out of primers again and stocked way up when they became available again. Then after the Sandy Hook tragedy all componets were out of stock again. As I write this I am beginning to work on a storage plan that the next time componets become scarce or hard to find that I will be able to continue shooting like before. I am a low volume shooter of around 500 rounds a month of pistol calibers and 200 rounds of plinking rifle rounds, so for me a small safety stockpile isn't too big. I was thinking about a years worth of supplies, because the last two shortages I've been caught with my pants down. I am not recommending hoarding by any means, just ensuring componet availability for my own shooting. Thoughts or comments? What do you guys keep stocked up with to prevent having to cut back on your range time? Shelby

As for myself I don't have a lot of components on hand as compared to others. Being of very limited funds I buy when the funds are there and I buy in bulk when I can. I have just recently started back into casting for my hand gun rounds. Yes I do have a supply to last me a while as I load mainly for my hunting needs.

Probably enough to last the rest of my life, unless I buy another gun. I just keep on the lookout for stuff as it becomes available to replenish what I've shot.

I have been trying each month when I find componets available to order twice as much as I used the prior month. That way I am restocking but also building a little cushion in my supply closet. As a side note remember that some locations are subject to the amount of powder and primers that can be stored in a residence. I just don't want to have to sit at home instead of playing at the range because I have nothing to fire. Shelby

i try to keep a 6 month supply of components. i buy as i use. as things get scarce i try to build a little hedge. i will not hoard. i found 3 one pound cans of cfe 223 last week at a local shop. the owner told me he got it that morning. it was very tempting to buy it all (there was no limit by the dealer) i only bought one of them. i know the frustration of not finding components. maybe after this panic of the last two years is over, we can get components anytime we need them.

There was a senator who was asked how many guns he had. (Name escapes me-I think he was from Texas.) His response was, "Probably more than I need, but not quite so many as I want." Good answer.

9mm I keep about 10,000 loaded rounds. I try to keep enough components to reload those 5 times 45ACP I have just over 8000 loaded and have enough components to reload those 3 times .223 I have way more than I would tell anyone with enough components to reload those many times over. 22-250 I keep 1000 rounds loaded and have no idea how many time they could be reloaded. 7.5 X 55 GP-11 ammo I keep 5000 rounds but don't reload them. The remainder 30BR, 7BR, 6BR, 22BR, 6PPC I keep about 200 loaded rounds on hand. I have the component to reload all of those about 4 or 5 times, .22lr I have enough competition rounds and everyday plinking rounds that I will probably never be able to shoot them all but I'm going to try. I also have some .380acp, .38 Super, .38 spl, .357mag, .41 mag, .44 mag, .460Rowland, S&W 460mag, S&W 500, .204, .219 Donaldson Wasp, .221 fireball, .222, .243, .308, .30 30, 7mm mag, and a couple of .338 lapua but these are in small numbers.

Ok... I think I am making the perennial mistake of posting after Dan on a thread like this ... Heh!
Projectiles Anyhow, as to projectiles, unless I am load testing, I purchase this stuff in lots of 500. .308 Several lots .284 / 7mm Again, several lots .45 More than several lots .357 A few lots, (this one is new for me) .25 ACP A couple of lots, (again ... new)
Primers Sometimes I buy this stuff in 1000 boxes. Most of the time, I buy this stuff in 5000 cases Large rifle Several cases Large pistol More than several cases Small pistol A few boxes, (new for me) Small rifle A couple of boxes, (I don't have an AR yet)
Powder Usually, here I only purchase the 1lb tubs for load development. Normally, I buy this stuff in either those 5 or 8lb kegs. Rifle A few kegs Pistol More than several kegs, (My older brother gave me his stash, which was well over 10 kilos)
.22LR OK ... I admit it... during the good times, (2010-2011), I honestly was hoarding this stuff. Mostly, I bought a brick here, and a brick there. It was mostly CCI minimags, and that Aguila Super Extra. Also, there are some Eley and SKJAGD stuff in there too. In hindsight, maybe I should have went out and purchased the stuff by the case instead of by the brick.
I cannot see why anyone would by this stuff by the box ... Actually, I did when I was a kid ... but I did not have much money back then.
Anyhow, I have a couple cases of this stuff ... various brands ... mostly the mid range and high end stuff. A couple of cases is roughly 10,000+ or thereabouts.
Loaded Rounds Lately, I have not been shooting and reloading much. I have been totally absorbed with building custom firearms with my new mill. In fact this weekend, I hope to put the final touches on the 1022 blank that I am finish machining.

I too am feeling totally inadequate. I keep telling myself its because I've only been reloading a lot for the past 5 years. Thankfully for my stockpiles I don't shoot that many calibers so its a little easier. Dangun you are my hero!!!

I do have a lot of components in store, just because I never know when there is no longer powder, primers and bullets on the shelfs at the local gun stores. Either due to new restrictions or due to supply troubles. Plus it get's more and more expensive each and every time I go to a gunstore. This I why I buy as much as I can afford or can get my hands on. When I don't do so I can not even reload at all. Mainly primers and gunpowder is a premium. I do break several gun laws with my hoarding but it's either that or quit shooting altogether........!
I don't mention how much I have just in case the law looks over my shoulder, but I can tell you one thing it's not all stored at my home.

I got bored yesterday & last night and cranked out another 1K of 9mm and more .223. I also forgot to mention in my last post that my empty brass assortment is outragous. The below listed numbers are for the 5 gallon buckets full of brass. 12 - 9mm 1 - .40S&W (not a fan of this caliber) 8 - small primer .45acp 3 - .380acp 2 - .38 spl 4 - .357mag 23 - .223 1 - 22-250 1 -.243 1 - .30 30 42 - .22lr for making bullets if I ever get to it. Most are sorted by brand. All other are less than a bucket each. Also all are decapped and clean. I think I have OCD when it comes to reloading.

Heck Dan,you could retire just on brass either as cases or scrap! The closest I get to you is 2.5 cubic feet of various caliber brass, 2.5 gallons 9mm ammo, and a bunch of other stuff.

Dan, Since you are not a fan of the 40 S&W you can send that bucket my way and I'll get rid of them for you.

My friends think I'm crazy for still picking up brass and I only have 1- five gallon bucket per caliber that I shoot. Dangun I could never be your friend as I would always drool over your reloading room. In my defense I did sell a whole lotta brass during this last panic, as every local kid who bought an Ar decided he needed several thousand pieces of brass even though he didn't own a press.

Gary while not a fan of the .40S&W I do try to keep some on hand to use as trading material. I have a few guys saving their SP .45acp brass for me and I trade the .40 for those usually.
Bob, I have an advantage that many people don't have when it comes to brass. I am an RSO at three ranges. All have the same rule. If you shoot it you can pick it up but if you don't pick it up it then belongs to the RO. I have gathered 2 5 gallon buckets of brass in one day if the range is busy. I have sold some brass on Gun Broker but I usually trade it for other things I want or need. My collection of brass is relatively small compared to a few of the other RSO's in the area. One guy that I know told me a few days ago that he would let me come by a get 4 or 5 buckets of 9mm. When I got to his place their were several hundred 55 gallon drums full of 9mm. Holy crap! He told me that was his retirement in a few years if the scrap prices went high enough. Springfieldxdm, Thanks for thinking my reloading room is worth drooling over. I used to have an obsession for buying reloading equipment. I think I'm over it finally but then again I'm not dead yet. I know my wife will go thru hell liquidating my estate LOL

I made the mistake as a rookie on a trap team of mentioning that I needed some hulls to reload as I only had about 600 hulls and was worried I would be able to keep reloading them fast enough for the next weekend. When I got to my truck that afternoon, my so called friends had filled the entire truck bed in a heaped pile with fired hulls. 99% were Remington gun club hulls and most were once fired as very few guys in the league reloaded. They thought I would get made and throw them back in the dumpster, I ended up taking them home and filled 4-55 gallon drums with them. Over the years I have given thousands away to new reloaders, also when going to ranges where I know other young guys want to collect hulls I leave them for them. It also saves my back. Because of that trick they played on me, I will never need any more hulls. I still have 2 1/2 drums left and only load a few hundred a year nowadays. This was around 1995 ish, not sure it could happen that way now. I do store about 300lbs of various lead shot. Some 00 buck, 4 buck, 7.5, 8, 9 birdshot all stored on the bottom of my reloading bench, that way it won't move or sway when I'm using the rock chucker.
