Got the chance to start working with this rifle yesterday and was pretty surprised. I worked with the 62gr Varmegdon and the following powders Varget 23.5-24.5gr(outstanding), Imr4895 23.5-24.5gr(wasn't very good), H4895 23.5-24.5gr(outstanding) and Benchmark 21.5-22.5(wasn't worth the time). Also used some 55 Nos BT's H335 23-24gr(mistake), Benchmark 23-24gr(pretty good), H4895 23.5-24.5gr(outstanding) and Varget 23-24gr(surprised me). All 3 shot groups at .2gr intervals and found that the flat based Varmegon was the most accurate with a book spec OAL ave 3 shot group was .90 the BT ave 3 shot group was 1.25. With each bullet I had one or two powders that we very good with H4895 and Varget being the winners yesterday. Still have a couple other combos to try 55gr Sie BK's and Gk's and I want to try some 64gr Nos Bonded Flat Based bullets also. So for now as you can tell I skipped out of work early LOL for a play day will keep you posted on what I find. I do have a question though is this normal accuracy for a firearm of this type?

Chuck, From what I have read on the Mini14 is that the ones produced today are way more accurate than those early models. The early one were made to be reliable in functioning but lacked the accuracy most wanted. This was due to the fact that the front sight was pressed on to the barrel and at times it would put a ever so slight bend to it thus the accuracy problems. They have since revamped on this and some other things to make them more accurate. What you are getting with your hand loads is about what others are getting. I also read that the 580 series are the one with improved accuracy.

Were the groups at 100 yds? If so out of the box thats not bad at all. Many old Minis were not even close to what you shot. They produce their own barrels now and are a little beefier....

Ok I have found that this rifle likes FB bullets over BT bullets. The Nos Varmageddon and 64gr Bonded bullets are the clear winners as far as accuracy goes. The load I am going to use the most will be the 62gr Varmageddon with 25gr of H4895 this should work very well for coyote control. If I decide I need or want a doe buster bullet for the kids then the 64gr Bonded Soild Base will be the bullet of choice over 24.5gr of H4895 or Varget.
The fact that this rifle likes the FB bullets over the BT bullets kind of surprised me a little. But the one thing I have learned is not to argue with the results I have a couple rifle that shoot lower BC bullets better than any other bullet I have tried in them.

Chuck: Be carefull with those solid base bullets, several years ago I had one pass through and through with NO damage to the animal. It was killed the following year scars proved it was the same buck. They may be a different bullet now though.

I have already used these bullets last year at 22-250 velocity but will do some extra testing at 223 velocity from my 18.5 inch barrel.
