OK ... one of my not-too-distant future projects is to try out the .25-06 barrel on my Mauser M66. I really like the Lapua brass. However; Lapua does not make brass for the .25-06.
So I was thinking about purchasing a bunch of Lapua .30-06 brass and resizing them for the .25-06
How does one go about doing this?
Can I do this by getting the .25-06 full length sizer die and sizing the .30-06 for .25-06? Are there any issues I need to consider? Or is it just a fool's errand and should I just go and purchase .25-06 brass from Remington or Winchester?
Thanks! Ken

Ken: I don't realy think any reloading exercise is a fools erand as you will learn from it. After that mouthfull however I'd say time and money better spent on .25-06 brass, also you have the correct head stamp to reduce confussion. My choice is Winchester if you can find it. Norma,Nosler or Hornaday make this brass, if so I'd try them. Good luck.

Ken, Yes it will work. You will need to lube the crap out of them. I know some don't like it but Imperial wax lube is awesome for this. Also you would need to run it in the die just a bit then back it out and check the brass. You may need to trim the length before completion of the necking down. I do this when making 22BR brass and I start with 6mmBR brass. I also make 219DW brass from 30-30 brass. and .222 from 223 of course the latter isn't being necked down but it does move the shoulder a lot. Also IMHO the Lapua brass is far superior to the others.

Ken I have done this Ken and going from .308 down to .257 I would like to caution you about case neck thickness check it carefully and correct it if needed. I ended up have to inside neck ream and then turn my necks down. Bob pointed you in the right direction and I would suggest if you buy brass despite my one issue with them I would go the Norma route if high end very good quality brass is what you want. Their is nothing wrong with Rem or Win brass at all though. If I ever go this neck down route for 25-06 again I will do it with 270 brass but will still check it to see if it needs any extra attention. BTW Dan is right about the imperial wax and lubing the crap out of the brass going down that far.

Maybe I should just go out and get a batch of .25-06 Norma. Then, all I would have to concentrate on is the normal brass work up. Thank heaven I only have to do this 1st time work up once.

Ken I have used a ton of Norma brass and despite the one issue I had with 7 RM brass I have to admit I have gone back to them for brass in 308, 7-08, 22-250, 223 and 243. Now I am going to use them for 25-06 once I get around to working with the one I traded a good friend out of yesterday the brass I made was for this rifle.

Any reason you couldn't buy .270 Lapua and only neck down a little? Maybe Lapua doesn't come in .270 either?
My experience necking down brass is limited to .308 LC brass to .243. Worked fine...necks were a bit short and neck walls a bit fat. So I used an outside neck trimmer to thin them down so as not to be too tight in the chamber.
One thing I discovered quickly with the hard and thick LC brass was that resizing with .308 dies first, made the brass form to .243 in the next step easier.
In your case you might size with 30-06, then .270, then .25-06 to ease the transition and make it easier to form. Maybe annealing somewhere in there would make the brass last longer.
The biggest minus is having a bunch of brass with the wrong caliber stamped in the case heads. Your last idea, buying Norma 25-06, would be my first choice.

I am leaning towards purchasing some Norma 25-06. I had not thought about the .30-06 headstamp on a .25-06 formed cartridge...
