I've mentioned before that I went to the range Sunday. There is a father son (the son some where between 12 and 15) team that seem to know it all(worse than me) any way the father professes to having killed a buck at 800 yds. 1 shot, and if you mention something regarding shooting he has pretty much done it. His son "built" an AR platform rifle so now he is a gunsmith, well He brought some ammo (one of the BR serries) to the range and was showing off his neck turning prowess. He turned the neck alright but kept going into the shoulder. It was politely(at first) suggested that perhaps he had gone too far, his father jumps in and gets in my face about how little I knew about neck turning, he is right I've never done it. I agreed with him about my lack of experience but then my "Too old to be nice" kicked in I took one piece of the ammo( by now the RSO was comming over) and showed it to him then I took the loaded cartridge by the bullet and the base and broke it . OOPs It broke at the neck shoulder intersection, I should have let him shoot them! The father swore at me then said he would never come out on Sundays again as he thinks that is the only day I'm there it should be interesting. I told the owner about the incident and he allowed as how maybe he won't be allowed on the other days. The really sad part of this is the boy will grow up not having respect for others and their contribution to his learning process.

Nothing worse in this world than a POMPOUS ASS, is there?? Just my opinion, but I think that is a MAJOR issue with the residents of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. for the past 6 years.
Even at 53+ years old, my mama taught me to respect my elders. That is why I have the utmost respect for ALL of y'all, since you've "been there, done that"...probably reloaded more ammo this year than I've shot in my lifetime...and I can LEARN from YOUR experience rather than act like a total "feminine hygiene product and the bag it comes in", much like this father/son dynamic duo of idiots.

Bob, I wish I could have been there for that. Maybe he could have taught me something! I tend to allow people to go ahead and pull the trigger on things like that as long as I'm relatively sure no one will get hurt. Then sit back and watch as they try to figure out how to remove the neck from the camber once it separates and get s stuck. I see that happen a few times. If you know how it only takes a couple of minutes.

Bob, You will always have those kind of people. Whether it be an individual ar in like father and son. Some seem to think once they learned one little aspect of something seem to now know everything about it. I know of a person that plays golf. Well when he started to learn he learned on a 9 hole course. The only clubs that worked on this course were Irons a chipping wedge and of course a putter. Now he is an expert on golf. So I asked if he had any Drivers and he looked at me like I was from outer space. He asked me if I played and I said no. So he goes on his rant that I don't know jack about golf. I told him if he is going to play on a good 18 hole course he needs Drivers. He does his rant and I said to him let me know when you do a 18 hole course and only need what he has got and does well that I'll buy him a beer and if not he buys me. Well weeks go by I see him and he buys me two. He then told me how how got schooled on a 18 hole course and learned about Drivers then. He asked how I knew since I don't play. I said I read on things so I know and understand what people are talking about. I had student in my EMT classes that seem to know it all because the were certified at the First Responder Level. So I would ask why you taking this class which I'm teaching and why they aren't teaching this class. Anyways back to the father and son team. I would also explain that after breaking that round that it could have blown the gun apart and injure him or his son or worse kill somebody. Bob you did right in what you did to save someone at that time. I do hope they do learn the proper way of doing thing in this sport.

Know what you mean about dealing with arrogant individuals who are IMO dangerous when they obtain a little knowledge and not the whole picture. Still you try to be politely helpful but get a response like “take your advice and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine”. After a while you become desensitized to the arrogant self proclaimed experts to let them find out the hard way. But when they try to drag along an innocent you feel obligated to try and intervene in some way to protect the innocent.
IMO you did right even if you had to change your demeanor to get your point of concern across.

I know far to many folks like this Bob. Try selling used equipment to folks they are all EXPERTS in everything equipment. Their are a few that know what they are talking about but most not so much. Like Dan I would explain to them what was wrong and then walk away far far away and be ready to dial 911 just incase.

Dan & All: That very thought crossed my mind, almost got stuck there. I chose my actions because there were too many shooters and and neither the RSO nor I were sure about the results him firing his rifle. Best case would be Dan's senario I was afraid he would not notice the difference and try a second shot or perhaps a slamfire which would be worse, also rember he "built" this rifle.

Hoo boy ... I think I would have just left folks like that alone. There are plenty of characters out at the range: 1. Chatty Kathy ... talks alot, appear to be master of everything including SOCOM / Special Forces tactics 2. Professor Expert ... knowledgeable about all things firearm ... new found intelligence because of AR or 1022 build 3. Legal FUDnick ... (FUD == Fear Uncertainty & Doubt) ... peculiar to the California shooting range ... cautions you on legality of what you are shooting 4. Mr. Deaf ... wears iPOD phones underneath ears ... cannot hear range commands and keeps shooting during ceasefire 5. SOCOM dude ... Usually some military experience but not special forces. RSO's have learned who these dudes are and really dislike them 6. Mr. LEO bad-ass ... Usually says "I can confiscate your firearm and haul your ass into jail ... However, this time I will let you go" ... again a California critter. Usually ... Mr. LEO bad-ass usually is not a LEO at all. They may have spent some time as appointed deputies with the sheriffs department or have done some work as a security guard. Most LEO's do not do this "Me-bad ... You peon" bullshit. If you do have something blatantly California illegal ... they just confiscate the thing on the spot. Then you got the Internets ... again ... HOO BOY! Here is a very good example of MASSIVE FAIL. This thread has so much fail ... I just do not know where to begin! It is a pretty entertaining thread however.

Ken, while some of the specific species noted in your post are creatures of California, there are sub-species whereever you go ! Good post ! BTW, I can handle stupid. Arrogance is ok. It's when there's a combination that I get irritated !

Ken, the Fail Thread--I've got to believe the guy was shitting everyone.
Since I posted that, I wondered why we haven't gotten more of that kind of thing, both here and back at the HUB. Limited exposure, maybe. I also have to think that the reactions here are pretty muted, and not a lot of fun for someone pulling something like that. Any thoughts ?
