Greetings to all from the great Republic of Texas! I just loaded my first 50 rounds of .38 Special using my new RCBS Case Activated Powder Expander. I am loading 158gr round nose/flat point lead bullets. I installed the expander per the instructions and the powder die is pretty much within a millimeter of the shell plate when the ram is at the top of the stroke. Problem is, it really doesn't "bell" the mouth of the case all that much. It does SOME, but not nearly enough when I start loading 148gr SWC. Does anyone have experience in setting up these powder expanders that could pass on some tips and tricks? Much obliged!

The case activated powder drop expander is not designed to be used with lead bullets. It will flair a certain degree before it really bells the case. They make an aftermarket expander that work well, but I have never used it. Some one will come up with the name in a minute. When I load lead on a progressive I use a dedicated expander die before the powder measure and all is well. That little bit of flair is all you need for jacketed or plated. Good luck and have fun Shelby

Appreciate the reply. I had this discussion on another forum board and I'm going to try putting the rifle bushing in the powder die to aid in adjusting the bell mouth. And it can be used with SWC...the guidance is that you have to bell the mouth at least .03" more than the diameter of the bullet. I'll keep working with it...
Thanks!
