Hey ya'll, I'm loading up some .38 Special with a 148gr BNWC. I'm using the RCBS Carbide 3-die Set and the description specifically says 3-die sets are roll crimp unless taper crimp is specified (like it is for the 9mm and .40 S&W dies I bought). At any rate, I can't seem to get a good roll crimp with the seater die on these Wad Cutters. I've even run the seater die all the way down until it's about 1mm from the shell plate. I followed the instructions to the letter, but it would appear it's not crimping at all...the seating depth is GREAT, but there just isn't any crimp. What remains is a slight bell from the expanding process and of course the rounds aren't fitting into the cylinder of my S&W 686. I got a pretty nice roll crimp when I made some .38 Special with a RNFP bullet, but can't seem to understand why I can't get the Wad Cutters to work. So...does anyone have any tips they want to pass along as to how they set up their seating/crimping die for a nice roll crimp with a Wad Cutter? Thanks! The friggin' NOOB!!

erj: If you got a nice roll crimp with RNFPs you should get the same crimp with the wad cutters. The die setting should not have changed for the different bullets the case length doesn't change. The seater plug should have been completely removed and replaced with the propper plug. Also do you have the coeect shell holder ? Had to ask!

LOL! Feel free to ask ANYTHING, Bob.....I AM the village idiot and it probably took more than a village to raise me. I finally got it to work. I had taken the seater die out to clean it when I changed the seater plug from RN to WC. I guess somewhere in the process of getting everything set back up again, something went askew and I was unable to get the crimp going again. I followed the steps from a post I read on another board..... - I got the bullet seat depth where I wanted it
- Backed off the seater plug a few turns
- Lowered the seating die until I got the desired crimp
- With the ram all the way up and bullet in the seating die, I screwed the seater plug all the way down until it came in contact with the top of the bullet
- Tightened everything down with lock ring/nut and made very minor adjustments to the seating plug from that point
I think I'm set! Crimp looks good and the rounds fall into the cylinder of my .357.
