A while back, I mentioned a Savage Model 340 (.30-30) that followed me home. I've been goofing around with it this summer, and it looks like it may stay around for a while, so I took it down and gave it my usual for field rifles-linseed oil, simonizing the metal, and whatnot. I reassembled everything, and took it to the range to see if I'd screwed up anything.
Surprisingly little change in point of impact, and grouped shy of !.5" at 100. Definitely minute of Bambi. The odd thing, was that after each shot, it would resonate, sort of like a bell. (For the musically inclined, I made it about a D.) I checked all the screws and looked for anything obvious, and found nothing. Any thoughts on cause or if it's a problem ? Doesn't seem to have any practical effect. Maybe I should just enjoy the music, even if it's not in my key ?

Pooh, Was this the first time firing this rifle? Did you fire this before then gave it the cleaning? I tried to see if there was anything like this on the internet but so far have come up empty.

Hi Hacker- I had fired it before I "fixed" it, both with some factory and handloads, my idea being to get a baseline to see how much, if any, I'd improved things. (I'd never admit I might make it worse ! ) This is weird. It is a sustained vibration that goes on well after the shot. We know barrels vibrate and flex in firing, but I'm not even sure this is totally in the barrel.

Ok, I was looking for something really exotic here. A friend of mine owned ne many moons ago and said, "did you check the magazine spring ?" It occurred to me that I had forgotten the magazine on Monday, and had single loaded it. Basically, without the magazine to put a damper on it, it took the hit from the cartridge going off, and had acted like a tuning fork. Of course, that carried through the stock, to my jaw, where I had my usual weld to the stock. Hacker, thanks for looking, but check out this exploded view-the part is # 55. www.leeroysramblings.com/Gun%20parts%20illustrations/Savage_340_illustrated.htmWhen I got home tonight, I took the rifle, removed the magazine, and tapped the magazine spring. Same vibration. Cool, huh ? Hacker, thanks for looking, and Bob, thanks for being included !

That is very interesting, I sure would not have thought that something like a magazine ,or lack thereof would be that significant. Thanks Pooh.

Pooh, I guess this is a way of letting you know that the rifle is out of ammo. Like for a Garand. When the last shot is fired the Enblock clip ejects with a ringing sound.

Hacker, it's different from the Garand. When you hear one of those clang, it's saying "Feed me !" When you hear the buzz from the Savage, it's saying something more like "You dropped your magazine three miles back, goofus !"
Snap-great call on marketing, although somehow, to really make it sound important, we'd have to say it's digital !
