It's a Remmington 700 in .308 26" heavy barrel and a real nice shooter. A few years ago I got tired of punching paper with it and started grabbing coyotes, ground hogs, and even a wild pig at my friends place in Texas. All of this was done at 300-400 yards. My ground hog round is 168gr A-max over Rl-15 and it rains down a mist of blood as they vaporize when hit. The coyotes get 150 gr Barnes mpg over Varget, the mpg is a powdered lead core and has amazing knock down power with exit wounds only about the size of a half-dollar. The Barnes powdered core mpg also took down the hog at 150 yds. When it comes to deer I am at a loss of what to use. In other posts a lot of you guys recommend the Nosler ballistic tips, any advise on what to expect from these? Most shots will be over 100 yds but under 300 yds. The rifle is capable and the shooter is capable most of the time, just want to pick the right bullet to do the job. As always I know I am way overthinking this but that's just me. thanks Shelby

Springfield..........I have been using Sierra Pro Hunter or Game King bullets for years with great success. I use a 165 gr. in the '06 140 gr. in the 7X57mm and 117 gr. in the .257 Rob'ts. I have also used Nosler Partition in several cartridges with equal success. A close friend uses Barnes TSX in his '06 and .308 Winchester for deer and elk with good results. Hope this helps some.

I am running 165 Sie GK's over Varget in a 700 SPS Varmint. I have used 4320, H & I 4895 and Viht 550 in the past. I have also used Not BT's in 150 and 165, Spr 165 BTSP's, Hor 165 IB's and Nos 150 and 165 Partitions. Their are a ton of good loads for this caliber for deer. You say you have a load for 168 AMAX's with RL15 that load will kill deer too.

Thanks so much guys, get to let my fingers do the shopping tonight. Going to try to find some Game Kings and will likely even try the TSX as I have always had good luck with the Barnes brand too. 7mm... Have you taken a deer with the Amax? I was afraid of a superficial wound considering how the explode on impact with the ground critters. I know hornaday only recommends them for paper punching but I do love them. Fortunately I have varget, rl-15, the 4895's, and lately been running Win 760 under 175 gr pulled surplus. Thanks Shelby

Shelby yes I have used them on deer in 168 and 178gr. I thought the same thing but a friend on our old home told me he uses them on deer. I tried them they act like a BT on deer I would recommend you avoid the shoulder area but they work well. My oldest daughter use to use them for everything.

Shelby I think a lot of the big mist you are seeing on groundhogs is the simple fact that their bodies can not contain the shock wave of the bullet hitting them. Kinda like a round to the skull the entire head become deformed but the thickness of human skin sometimes keep the skull kind of together with all its parts. I have seen deer killed with 53 gr 22 caliber V-Max bullets with complete pass throughs.
