Ok time to stir the pot a little . Everyone has one and everyone has a reason for it so lets hear it. What is your favorite deer rifle and why. Mine is simple its the 7-08 and as much as it pains me right now the 140gr Nos BT over either H414 or IMR 4895. The reason is simple I have used this combo the most and have never lost a deer as long as I did my part. Now that doesn't mean their aren't other great deer guns out their its a personal thing don't you know.

I grew up reading Jack O'Conner's stories so when it came time to upgrade from my Win 94 30-30 I bought a Rem 700ADL in .270 cal. It's been a great rifle and always done it's job if I did mine. When my son turned 12, that was 13 years ago, I bought him a Browning A-Bolt in 7mm-08 and it too has been a great rifle. It's a little, ok a lot, loud. It has a BOSS on it.
There I got both pots stirring, your anti .270 and love the 7mm's, both great choices.

Well Chuck, you started it! My favorite is a Ruger 77 with a 4X Lyman All American scope in 7X57mm 140 gr. Sierra PH or GK over H414 for the same reason as you more dead deer. This is closely followed by my .257 Roberts(the R'bts is realively new by comparison). I have not lost a deer with either rifle.

JB my distain for the 270 is because of people I know. I know it is a very good round and have plenty of friends that shoot them. I just got tired of being told I was an idiot for not having one because it is the greatest thing since sliced bread LOL.....

I'll add my spoon. I have taken deer with the 30/30 Win; the 308 Win; the 444 Marlin; and of course the 7mm-08 Rem. The 7-08 is my all time favorite. I use Nosler 140 grain Ballistic Tips over W748. It is my most accurate load in my 700 BDL with Ram Line stock with a Weaver 2x10x38. This is a hell of a rig with my load. When the cross hairs are on the boiler room and eat damn good after words.

i've taken many deer with .243, .270. finally settled many years ago on old school 30-06. savage 116 stainless with leupold vx2 3x9x50. always accurate, always easy to reload for, and always lets the air out of any deer shot with it.

I can’t say I have one fav! Took deer with a lot of guns and rounds but would have to say I 3 go to guns now are: Tikka T-3 Lite .300WSM, Win M-70 Classic FW 7mm-08 and Ruger 77 SS in .308 Win. I only use the Sierra GK 165gr HPBT for the .30 Cal’s and till Sierra came out with the 140gr HPBT in the 7mm, I only used the Hornidy 120gr HP (discontinued) (nice thing about this load, I saw every bullet hit in the scope).

Well the last post to this thread was a year ago, I'm going to change my favorite cartridge to my afore mentioned .257 Rob'ts as it has now taken,as of this past weekend, 10 deer with 10 shots. The farthest being 160 yds. and the closest being 66yds. This change in no way diminishes my liking the 7X57mm. This years deer load was 120 gr Nosler Partition at 3,050 fps.

My favorite is whatever has my attention this year. In the past I have taken deer with 0.440" round ball, 0.500 Maxi-Ball, 60,62,64,65gr 223 Remington, 80 and 100gr 243 Winchester, 125, 150 and 170gr 30 WCF, 150gr 308 Win, 165 and 180gr 30-06, 180gr 7.62X54R and 405gr 45-70 Govt.
Last year a cobbled together tacti-cool AR in 5.56 shooting 65gr Sierra Game Kings went to the woods. This year I think it will be a 14" barreled 30 WCF Contender pistol shooting 125gr Sierra Game Kings over a charge of Hodgdon Benchmark.

will not change my choice. I will however mention a very close second. That being the 7RM with a 160gr Speer BTSP and a heavy charge of Retumbo it is awesome. I have also been working on a newish load for the Winchester Mod 70 Ultimate Shadow I picked up a few weeks ago. That load a 150gr Sierra Game King over 70.2gr of IMR7977 Hornady brass, CCI 250 primers. I get a 10 shot string average of 3081fps with single digit SD and ES numbers. I have a couple 5 shot 200yd groups of right at and inch. I will be packing this rifle more this year with either load. The correction is a minor one to go from the 150gr to the 160gr loads simply up 2 inches and left 1 inch.
Now to add a disclaimer those SD and ES single digits were achieved by tweaking the seating depth and weighing each charge twice once on a digital and once on a balance beam. I am getting pickier and pickier as I approach the half century mark LOL........

My favorite deer rifle was my flaig aced A303 loaded with 4350 and 180 gr Sierra Game Kings. But my new favorite Is a custom built Remington 700 in 7 mm STW at 316 yards up hill this past season I was blessed with my biggest buck I've ever had a chance to tag.
