According to my wife I am a big idiot tell me if you think so too: Background I have a very good life long friend that just retired after 26yrs in the US Navy. I have known this man since the 80's and consider him more my brother than my friend. He just moved here but lives about 40 miles away. He is getting ready for a trip to Montana for an elk hunt and called to ask me if I knew were he could find his preferred factory ammo 160gr Nos Partition 7RM from Federal I told him to try Jason. No luck so I told him if he wanted to bring his rifle over and I would see if I could help him out. He came over this afternoon about 3:30 while I waited for him I got the once shot Hornady brass I have put away out and ran a FL sizing die over them. I got out a box of 160gr Sie GK's 100 Fed 215's and IMR 7828 and Retumbo. Bob got here and I asked to see his rifle so I could make a dummy round for his chamber he just looked at me like I was an idiot till I explained why. I made his dummy and had him prime all 50 pieces of brass after showing him how to on a couple pieces. I set up my dies and measured his dummy so I could set up my dies. I decided to just use IMR 7828 today and loaded him up 30 rounds the entire way showing him how to do it and explaining why I was doing what I was doing. I started at 62.8gr and went up in .3 steps till I hit the book max of 65.8gr so he could test the loads in his rifle. Once that was done we went out to the bench and sat down for him to shoot at the mid point of the cycle accuracy started to pick up and by time we 65.2gr he was shooting sub moa groups. We decided to stop their. I had him clean his rifle while I went in and loaded him another 15 rounds to see if our choice was right to stop and with a cleanish barrel he shot 5 groups in the .8 range so we called it good and ate some dinner. When he left he had a box and a half of rounds. He offered to pay for them but I declined and told him to come over again and we could work on some of his other rifles but at that point he would need to cover the cost of components. When he left is when my wife informed me I was a big idiot to which I just shrugged and walked away. Yes I gave him brass, powder, primers and bullets in order to hopefully plant the seed and germinate a new member to our ranks which she doesn't understand. What do you guys think am I an idiot or maybe I just wanted to help my brother?

Chuck, Being an idiot NO!!!!! Being responsible YES!!!! Sooner or later he will want to do his own work. You are and have planted the seed. My son-in-law with the AR yes I have been doing the load development but he has been helping to get brass (his once fired and range) primers and powder and bullets. Yes he want's to learn to reload his own. I gave him two manuals to read and has asked questions from the reading. He wants to do shot shell also. I have told him what he needs to get as I can not foot everything for him and he understands this. It is like when I was showed how to tie my shoes as a child. I was showed after that it was up to me to do it. No body is going to be taking me by the hand every day of my life sooner or later you are on your own.

Gary is right Chuck.... You were definitely NOT an idiot for doing this.
1. You had fun doing this 2. Your friend walked away with very high performance and SAFE loads 3. As Gary said ... You planted good seeds in the very good soil of firearms and reloading 4. And ... Women do not get it!
Need I say more?
Heh!

Chuck you are an"idiot"! I know, as I just did almost the same thing for my neighbor of 32 years. He recently bought a Savage 110 .30'06 so I helped/showed him develope a load for it. Then I got my M1 he wanted one also, we got him a nice Winchester M1 Garrand next I was given 200+ once fired Winchester '06 brass which I started to work on, he found out that I had the brass and 150 pcs. were to be his and came right over and rolled up his sleves. We had worked together many time before on neighborhood projects and other projects,(he was a building contractor) but never as close. He probably won't ever be a solo handloader but he has indicated an interest in assisting me. It will be nice to have the company from time to time when he is loading his own ammo or when I am doing mundane tasks, brass prep.and such also at the range. This tightend up a solid frendship!

I would do the same thing for any of my friends if they asked for help or most anyone else for that matter. Difference is my wife wouldn't know or care anything about it .......... but she does the same thing with her quilting hobby and friends.....bet your wife does too (friends 'n hobbies). Thanks for the reinforcement that there are still plenty of really good and helpful people left in America. America may be on the decline, but we ought not dwell on the evil side and pay more attention with what and who is good about America.

Chuck
Women especially wives are good at making you question your own actions. My old lady knows that such a tactic doesn’t work on me anymore so it gets seldom used when she is displeased. She still tries once and a while but more so to express her displeasure.
I see no wrong doing to help a good friend even if giving of self possessions is involved. I do the same with no regrets or questioning my actions afterwards. Helping others especially a good friend has its own reward.

Chuck, it's entirely possible that you're crazy, but you addressed your question to an asylum full of crazies ! I think you did it by the numbers, but I'm a little touched, myself !

Pooh I gotta tell you I am not crazy and have the papers to prove it . I pointed out to her this morning that I have been loading for her oldest son for about a year and he has never once offered to help or return any of what has been used for him. She huffed and puffed about it so I told her I wouldn't do any more loading for him till he replaced what I have already used for him and since I am out of the powder for his rifle as well as bullets he is SOL. She got right online and started looking for him LOL so what are you gonna do I was dammed for helping yesterday and I will be dammed when I tell her son NO........

Chuck, Idiot no, crazy no!!! A good friend... YES! I can't speak to why your wife feels the way she does but mine likes the fact that I always try to help others. Even if it cost me a few bucks to do so. I would hate to have the reputation of someone that will help only for the money. Yes you planted the seeds but to me it wouldn't matter one way or the other if they grew or not. You helped a friend and that is what matters. Asking him to cover the cost of future reloading sessions is very reasonable and more than fair in my book. It's just good fellowship!
I have asked many friends for help on various projects. Offering to pay their expenses is always something I do as well. Some except payment some don't but either way I don't even think twice about it. You're a good man Chuck, don't change..stick to what you believe in.

You're a good man Chuck, don't change..stick to what you believe in. Dan even asking him to cover future supplies pained me. I don't know what was up her but either the other day but she has seemed to have a change of heart or mood. It just pissed me off that she acted that way she is normally the first one in line if someone needs help friend or foe. Her son came over this morning and we all had a little chat and he is going to replace what he uses from now on. I hated to have to take a prick stance with her toward him but she realized why I did at some point yesterday.
Thanks for the replies everyone I kinda had a feeling how it would go and appreciate the fact that you all feel like I do. BTW my buddy called and asked for a list of things he would need for 25-06, 308, 30-06 and 300 Win Mag this morning I told him what I thought he needed for components and offer to lend him a couple of manuals. I even told him if he couldn't find something I had he was welcome to use it as long as he helped or took a notion to learn how to reload.
