I see some of you are purchasing or building AR,s in 223 /5.56, Why not in 30 cal.?I do realize maybe it don't fit the bill.Reason I am asking I just purchased 2 DPMS 80% lowers in 308 to build.I found Hackers post on barrel twist rates interesting.Have any of you built a AR in 30cal? If so would be interested in sharing some do & do not's.This will be my first rifle build I want to do it right the first time

Mornin' Loafer...
I personally haven't built an AR, but one of my best friends who is a Marine and was you-know-where in the late 60's wants to build an AR platform in .308 Winchester. I think it would be AWESOME!!!! "Gavintoobe" is BRILLIANT and I've subscribed to his YouTube channel...he has great quality and quantity of information for anything I've had questions about. Here's his AR Build intro video...
You may be able to watch enough videos on his channel to get all the information you need without purchasing the DVD. Not sure how much the DVD costs, but I'm sure it's worth it.

I was never an AR guy but my son got me into it, last year. We each bought an AR-15 and AR-10 80% lowers and built them up. I have finished both and put a 300 Blackout on the the AR-15 (already have 5.56mm). If you want to shoot 30 Cal in the AR-15, and want to stay short range, this is a fun choice. My AR-10 will be a .308 but I haven't had the funds to do the upper yet. My son did his in .308 but just for fun put a 50 Beowulf on his AR-15. I'm here to tell you, that's fun to shoot.

I can't help you much....I went to 30 caliber the easy way....bought a Remington R25 back in November 20......well the year America lost it's way trying to show the world how "unracsist" they were. I will tell you one thing.....it's accurate. First time out after just a bore sighting, I shot standing, leaning against a post, to just see if I could even hit the paper @ 100 yards. It gave me a 1"group, one edge in the black! Boy that was dumb luck, but NTL it showed what it was capable of as a hunting rifle. That was using the freebie 165g Remington Corelokt the dealer threw in. As most know, the rifle is a DPMS made for Remington, using Remington's specs to make it a hunter's rifle. What specs did Remington insist on for hunting? - Free-floated button-rifled 0.680″ Muzzle OD ChroMoly barrels with recessed hunting crown and a 1:10 twist rate. (would have rather had a chrome plated barrel) - Adjustable clean-breaking single-stage hunting trigger factory set at 4.5-5lbs. The down side......heavy damned thing. Nothing like my sweet little .243 carbine. (Remington 600). So do you want this build to be a hunting rifle or S.D. rifle or both? Good luck making a light one.

Gws this will be used for hunting.I have my eye on a upper from Redmond Arm's formally Colfax Arm's.The owner guarantee's 1 MOA at 900 yrds.1:10 twist, with that said I need to figure out what I am going to shoot thru it so he can set the upper up.So more home work & if any of you have any good ideas chime in will be appreciated

1st of all ... did you finish them on a mill or a drill press? I have yet to do such a thing. Since you are a fellow Californian ... Yes; the 80% receivers are very popular, and really one of the few ways we can still exercise our 2nd amendment rights. Anyhow ... about Photobucket. All you need to do is click on your new uploaded picture, and on the right hand side click the DIRECT text box option. This will copy the URL into your Windows Clipboard. Then you need to do the following: 1. Click on the "Insert image" icon on your "Create Post" menu 2. Click on the link in the "Image URL" text box ... Make sure it is empty 3. Either right click and the pop-up will show paste and click the paste. Or you can use the CTRL-V hot key to paste 4. Click the "Insert Image" button Your linked image should show up on this site. I look forward to seeing your build. Building 80% is a lot of fun. It is even better when you try out your build at the range. There is a huge ton of satisfaction knowing that you have scratch-built your very own firearm!

Another pic I will take better pics on the next lower, I was at a friends shop to do this.It was all set up in a jig to drill holes in the key locations and to mill trigger pocket.I have a good friend that just bought a different jig that you can use a router it comes with the milling bits & spacers to get the job done from the videos I have seen it is a pretty slick set up, it is like milling with out the mill.Bob you might be able to zoom in on the first pic & see better
