At an auction I watched a man buy 8 bricks at $85.00 each. I can cast bullets and load 38's for a lot less than that.
At the local gun shop last week. The owner reports his .22 rifles and pistols aren't selling. Too hard to find ammo. The days of running through a couple of bricks with the grand kids on a Saturday afternoon are over.

That is why I have the Hornet and the Bee. Actually not just kinda sorta lucked out in that respect. They still run about 8-10 cents each.

Actually; I have plenty of .22LR ammo. I was hoarding the stuff during the good times.
Right now; I am purchasing a brick here or there of the good stuff, (ELEY, SKJAGD etc). When you can get the ELEY Club, or SKJAGD standard for the same price as the lower quality stuff then why purchase the lower quality stuff?
Anyhow ... I do believe .22LR ammo will come down dramatically in price within another year or so.
Therefore ... I would not worry too much.
Availability of components has become quite good recently. Why burn .22LR when one can shoot pistol ammo all day long for a quite reasonable amount of $$$?

The big firearms store here in New Hamster had a promotion going on. It wasn't well-advertized, but word came back through the grapevine that .22 was available. I wanted to get a brick or so to stay ahead with my Scouts, so I wandered down on Friday. They had a pile of Federal and some other stuff. In any event, I walked off with three bricks at $20 per. I could have gotten off with 10% off that if I were a veteran. I probably could have grabbed more or gotten the discount, but I prefer to buy the ammo for the Scouts myself with no special consideration, so that if I need a box of .22, and that stuff happens to be on top, I don't feel bad about grabbing one. (I also don't have to account for it or the way I run the program.) In any event, there was also a similar promotion (not as good) at another place nearby. I don't know if this is a harbinger of Good Times Ahead, but it's another data point.

Pooh, That is an awesome deal for a brick of 22lr. If this is the start of the trend then all those hoarders that bought and then turned around and sold them for $50+ a brick. Well I sure do hope they choke on each and every round they have.

One of the things that strikes me is that, at least anecdotally, piles of the stuff show up for promotions like I went to, yet other times, you can go weeks before it shows up in the ordinary course of things. In the most recent instance, I'm sure that the shop was using it as a loss leader to get people in the door. I don't buy into the various conspiracy conjectures (strictly speaking, they're not even legitimate theories) since no one seems to be able to produce evidence to support the allegations. I would, however, like to be a fly on the wall in a few places to figure out how this is really playing out.
Hacker, I think all of hope the scabs choke on the stuff. I personally wouldn't buy from any of them unless I could be positive they were taking a huge loss !

I was just looking on GunBroker and I see that my local shop has 57,750 rounds of .22 ammo up for auction. It sure would be nice if they would put some of that on the store shelves. Oh I'm sorry, they wouldn't have as much profit doing that.

JB- I guess it's theirs and they can do what they want, but I might remember that the next time they're talking about customer loyalty.

I don't know what it's worth, but I just skated over to gunbroker, and scoped out the lots closing over the next hour. Much offered, but very little being sold. (One exception, CCI Stingers- I don't know what the fascination is, but that stuff seems to be moving. Isolated/limited sample, but another data point.
