I started shooting in 50yd 22 rimfire matches many years ago. I was blessed that I received my first real competition rifle at a young age but for many months I was not impressed with it. It didn't seem to shoot any better than other rifles even though I was using the best ammo to be had. When I got the rifle I hastily assembled it per the instructions. Anschutz rifles come with the action and barrel separated from the stock and give specific instructions on the assembly and torque to attach them. The other instruction were ignored because I was impatient and wanted to go practice.
One day my mother asked how the rifle was shooting and I hated to tell her some of my other rifles seemed to shoot better. She then asked if I had put it together correctly. Of course I said yes. Then she asked if I read all the instructions. When I hesitated she told me to go read the instructions front to back and behold I had never heard of barrel break in before or not cleaning the barrel.
If you have never owned an Anschutz you will be shock to read the following. For break in and general use they say to shoot 5000 rounds before you clean the barrel! What? this has got to be a typo right? I know I know this goes against everything most of us were ever taught about cleaning a gun. Once you have cleaned it the instructions say to not clean again until the accuracy drops off. Ok so as hard as it was, I started shooting everyday after school and noticed that after about 500 rounds the accuracy started going up. When I finally got to 5000 it was shooting so good I didn't want to clean it but I did.
After cleaning it I was afraid that I had screwed it up, it wouldn't shoot but again after about 500 rounds it was competition ready. I haven't counted the rounds through that gun since and the barrel over the past 30 years has only been cleaned 1 time since then. Of course the action, mags and the rest of the gun gets cleaned everytime I get home from the range.
My other competition rimfire rifles are on the same cleaning schedule. I have a couple of nice Winchester 52C's that have never been cleaned other than the actions in the last 15 years that I have owned them. All three of these rifles will hold their own against any other 22 rifle I have ever shot against factory or custom.
I just wish it worked that way with center fire rifles.
