I think most of you are aware that Remington has been under scrutiny over their trigger system in the 700 series. Checking news reports this morning, it looks like there is a settlement pending approval by a judge of at least one class action involving discharges due to design. It doesn't seem to be making major news outlets yet (it was released on Friday afternoon, traditionally a good time not to be noticed too much), but you may wish to Google it and check the stories. Apparently, the settlement affects not only the 700, but a bunch of variants, such as the 721/722 series.
My son pointed this out to me. His comment was interesting-only a hundred or so out of almost eight million ? (He also posited, and rightly, the fact that at least *some* of those discharges had to be operator induced.) I do find it odd, as I've coexisted (never owned, except a 722) with a lot of them on the line at highpower matches with nary a hiccup.
In any event, you may want to check this out. A paper in Helena seemed to have the most balanced coverage. Please omit the lawyer cracks. I have a headache...
Quick edit--this is the story I was referring to. Again, probably the best balanced, at least thus far. Don't go to NBC or CNBC unless you've taken your blood pressure medication for the day.

Pooh, I read a similar report yesterday. I have a Mod 700 have to wait to see if it is in fact to be included in the recall. I have yet to experience a hiccup but since they will take care of it. On a side note I wonder what the turn around would be once they start receiving rifles?

Pooh, Again thanks for your effort in getting more of the facts in this matter. I should have known that the MSM or should I state the OMG (guess what that stands for) for putting a twist on this issue to as I will still say. Push their agenda in any form possible. As I stated before I have yet to experience any type of miss hap with my trigger on my Mod 700. It has been a most reliable rifle to own.

I bought my M700 ADL in 1984. I have never had a problem with it yet. It had IMO a good trigger to begin with but a quite a few years ago I had a gunsmith do his magic with it. I'm not sure what the trigger pull is on it now but it is pretty light for a deer rifle but I still have never had an issue with it.
I just wonder if they are recalling all of the M700's and variants of that they have produced or just certain years with the offending triggers. Time will tell.

Not that I typically wear a tin foil hat, but does it concern anyone else about the start of a potential registry starting when you send your name and gun in for repairs. Some how the information will get into liberal hands or the goverment (you decide which is worse). Almost makes you want to take your chances with the jacked up trigger. Yes mister dea agent already knows that we have those damn guns (from being on places like this) but now they will have make and serial numbers too. Rant over.....

I got my 700ADL in '62 and solved the trigger problem immediately I had a Timmey trigger installed.

The recall involves 7.5 million rifles. I have a 700 VTR that never has had any issues. I decided to call Remington , and sure enough, my serial # is on their recall list. They immediately sent me via email shipping labels for the return thru UPS. They will pay for shipping both ways and the trigger exchange. They are sending me a box to pack the rifle. The Customer Care rep said "6-8 weeks" but I have a feeling it's going to be longer than that. At least they will adjust trigger pull as requested. I asked if I bought a Timney trigger and installed it if I would be reimbursed, but the Rep said the recall did not include that option. Seems to me that all they are doing must far exceed the cost of under $200.00 for a new trigger. Well, I hope they don't go broke before I get my rifle back!

Hacker, the recall on the Remington is the one on the more recent 700 & 7 models. It is, in fact, a recall. Remington (see the 2d link I posted) denies that the more comprehensive settlement of the class action is in fact a recall. It has yet to be put into motion, as it is awaiting the approval of the judge. (Among other things, he has to approve the payment of attorney's fees.-Yeah, I'd notice that.) Keep your eye peeled, as the retrofit opportunity will encompass stuff not covered by the recall, like they 721/722 series.
I guess everyone has to make their own call about the retrofit. My lawyer side says that if you fail to get retrofitted, there is a potential for personal liability if you had notice of the problem and failed to take correction, and that led to injury. On the other hand, yeah, there's the whole serial number/list thing, and the fact that if a rifle is working, I hate to disturb the bedding. I also like to know who's taking my rifle apart and reassembling it. Whatever. Lex, I'll be interested to see how your replacement goes. Please keep us posted.

I assume Remington will be doing the replacement themselves since it is going to their Repair Center. I will keep you all posted.

Lex, Have you seen any type of a listing of serial numbers? Other than you calling them to see if your's is one of the affected ones.

Hello Hacker No, but since I have a 700 bought back in 07, I figured I better check. I called Remington at 1-800-243-9700. Spoke to Renee in Customer Service and gave her the serial#. She confirmed that it was part of the recall. Other than calling, don't know how you could find out. Remington won't pay for me changing the trigger myself, I guess it's part of the liability involved , so I'm waiting for the box to arrive to ship it. I did get email confirmation from UPS that it has been shipped. So far, so good.

As I suggested, the judge has some questions regarding the settlement, and rather than ruling on it immediately, has scheduled a hearing the first part of February. If you're interested in details, hold your nose and go to: www.cnbc.com/id/102265345#Personally, I'm going to look for a more trustworthy source.

Pooh, For at the moment that seems to be the only source. I checked on Rem's site and nothing new there as of yet.

I went on line and the serial number of my 700 was on the list. It took them almost a month to get the return box and paper work to me and then they had the rifle for four months before I got it back. They said that the problem was with some type of sealant they used in assemble and not to try and correct it locally. I went almost 6 months from the time they first said "do not use" and I finally got it back. At that time the only thing they offered in addition to the rework was a discount if I went to the Remington Store on line and spent more money with them.

I just received the return box from Remington. Actually, got two instead of one! Maybe they will send me two rifles back for all the aggravation. No such luck, I'm sure! I now have to unmount the scope and the stock and put the original one back on. I'll be sending it back this week. Hopefully back by April!

Hello everybody Well, here is an update. I just received an email that my rifle has shipped out back to me! I am really happy. I thought it would take months, but apparently Remington is doing this replacement rather quick. I know it's not a major job. Looking forward to getting it back. Now I'll have to mount the scope back on it and zero in. Well, a good excuse to go to the range! Happy and Prosperous New Year! Lex

Lex, as these things go, that was quick. Not letting you off the hook, however, please be sure to let us know how the new trigger works !

Hello everybody. Well, here it is, a New Year and a new trigger on my 700! Just got it back. Must say, I'm pleased that it only took about 3 weeks. Guess Remington is on the ball with the replacements. I did dry fire it and the new trigger is crisp and smooth. Don't have a gauge, but it feels much better than the old one did. I'm planning on going to the range as soon as I remount the scope and change the stock. Then zero it in and will see results. Will keep you all posted. Best wishes for the New Year. Lex
