My son is starting to work up a load for his Smith & Wesson M&P. He bought a box of Rainier 165 grain RNFP plated bullets a few months ago. Looking on Hodgdons site for data and powder choices he bought a pound of LongShot powder when our local shop finally had a powder that he could use.
Rainier says to use cast bullet info.
Here is the only info we have found:
165 GR. BERB FP Powder COL Start Max Longshot 1.125 6.9 7.8
165 GR SIE JHP Longshot 1.125 7.3 7.8
I'm not familiar with the 165 GR. BERB FP. Is this a plated or cast bullet?
He did load 3 rounds to test and the gun cycled fine but my concern was how much further the empties were thrown compared to the factory loads. I'd say they flew 50% further than the factory rounds and the case mouths were dented more than the factory rounds were.
First off, is this data safe and 2nd doe's anyone have any data that is better. We know that Longshot is meant for shotguns but Hodgdons listed it for .40S&W also.
Thanks, John

That is the exact same powder and bullet I used in mine. I loaded them 7.1gr behind a 165gr Rainer at 1.125" COL. You will want to check the primer. Did it show signs over over pressure? How far the brass or really how much the mouth is dented isn't really a good indicator of anything. If the primers aren't flattened or the striker indent isn't cratered then what ever load he used was ok. I do like to stay close to the min on plated bullets as long as the still cycle ok.

jbnut, That 165gr BERB FP I do believe that is from Berry's Manufacturing and yes they do hard cast and also plate their hard cast. Also 95%+ of your shot shell powders are used for handgun loads. I also use LongShot in some of my loads along with Universal Clays, International Clays, Red Dot, Blue Dot, and Win. Super Field all shot shell powders that I use in handgun.

Thanks guys that makes me feel better. I got driving down the road and I realized that I never told you the load he tried. It was loaded with 7 grains of powder. Sounds like we're in the ball park. Thanks again.

Just be careful with load data posted like that. Whoever posted many of those loads didn't fill in the submitted by part. It maybe perfectly safe but I would stick with manuals.
