Well I finally upgraded from the Savage 340 to a CZ 527 American. I've heard a lot of good things about it so I hope it lives up to it.

John, I think you did pretty well in acquiring this. There is two 22 centerfire rifles that I would like to acquire is the Hornet or the K-Hornet and the 221 Fireball. The Hornet would be with a good hard cast for small game hunting and the Fireball for varmints like groundhog. You will have to let us know how it performs on target and in the field.

That is a nice looking rifle, I have the Ruger M77 in .22 Hornet and is a lot of fun to shoot and easy to hand load for. I got an RCBS competition seating die for it(and others) so I don't pinch my fingers placing bullets in the seating die, they go in the side. Let us know how it shoots, and congratulations!

Well it warmed up just enough today that I had to take the CZ out for a test spin. Considering that the scope had only been bore sighted at the shop I was very pleased to have the first 2 shots hit only a couple of inches low.
Now I only had 4 factory rounds left to my name. As stated earlier the first 2 were a little low, on the next 2 shots I remembered about the set trigger so I used it for them. Those 2 shots came up to just the bottom left of the bull and were only 3/8ths " apart. I know that's only 2 shots not a group but it does give me hope I can make it shoot well.
I still had some 33gr Speer reloads left from the Savage I had so I took out 5 of those. Well the CZ didn't seem to like them so well, about a 2.5" group. I have put together some 35gr Hornady V Max loads to try but I think I should probably clean that new bore again before I do too much testing.
Let the games begin. No scope adjustments were made today, not much point in it yet.

John, A late friend and hunting buddy had very good results with the 35gr. V-Max bullets in his Hornet but can't remember what powder he used.

I only have W296 on hand right now. I have looked for LiL Gun but have never seen it on the shelf it's kind of like hunting for a unicorn. I'm kind of tempted to buy some more factory ammo to "break in" the barrel with before I start using up all of my components. We'll see.

JB, As Pooh stated the IMR 4227 is an old standby for the Hornet. You can also use Hodgdon's H 4227 and then Alliant's 2400. These were also old standbys for the Hornet. In your load developement you7 might want to go back and forth between small rifle and small pistol primers to see what works best. Speer's #14 manual use small pistol primers in their load testing for their data as it gave more uniform results in velocity and accuracy.

Thanks for the info Pooh & Hacker. I did use the small pistol primers with the Speer 33gr bullet in the other Hornet so I've got quite a good supply of them. The 35gr V-Max test loads I have put together I used small rifle primers. I wasn't sure if I should use the Hornady load data with the small pistol primers or not. I still have some Sierra 45gr & Barnes 30gr Varmint Grenades I can try that the Savage didn't like.

John, Try the Hornady data with small pistol primers and see what happens on target.

JB, I tried the Lil'Gun in my Hornet and wasn't really thrilled, however I found H110 & H4227 to produce very acceptable results with the Sierra 45 gr. Hornet bullet. T Lil'Gun works really well in my .218 Bee. Look forward to hearing more results from you. What length barrel does your CZ have?

My son & I are going on a little road trip tomorrow to Grice's Gun Shop in Clearfield, Pa for their Annual shooters sale so I'll look for some other powder to try out. I think I'll look for some of the new powders that Chuck was testing also. I know It's most likely another "Unicorn" hunt.

Well I finally hit the bench with some test reloads last night. The starting loads left a lot to be desired but the last group shows some promise. .
Hornady 35 gr V-Max W296 Fed SRP
I'm still .4 gr under the Hornady manual max load so I will go just a little further with the next test

Jb: that is pretty respectable. I just picked up my Ruger No.1 in .22 Hornet today can't wait to try it out. Unfortunately that will have to wait as I'm going to Lake Tahoe for a hunter education conference.
