I have finally worked with all three of the new IMR powders and will address each individually. First up is 4551. I tried this powder in several different fire arms I even stooped to shooting a 30-06 and a 270. Everyone that just chocked sorry LOL. The other calibers I tried it in were a 243 for my sister a 25-06 I have and one of my 7mm08's. This is what I found and what I think about this powder. It has it's place for each of the calibers I tried it in. This powder comes close to matching all of the IMR 4350 loads I have tried along side of it. Like the 4166 and 7977 I used this powder has more of a sustained push once the trigger is pulled instead of the jolt I have gotten from IMR4350. It dose a fair job of reducing copper fouling as the other two do also. Over all I like the powder and will work more with it in the 25-06 and for my sisters 243. My best results for each rifle I tried is listed below.
243 41.6gr under a Sierra 100gr GK from my sister Savage Axis II Muddy girl 2885fps with a .779 3 shot group (will work more with this one)
25-06 51.0gr under a 100gr Nosler Partition form a Winchester Mod 70 Ultimate Shadow 3168fps with a .880 3 shot group (will do more with this one)
270 Win 55.0gr under a 130gr Barnes TTSX from a Remington 700 ADL 2984fps with a 1.150 3 shot group(first time with this bullet in this rifle)
7mm08 45.5gr under a 145gr Speer BTSP from my 700 Remington SPS Varmint 2722fps with a 1.134 3 shot group (this rifle and bullet with H4895 is a .5 all day shooter)
7mm08 43.0gr under a 160gr Speer BTSP from my 700 Remington SPS Varmint 2604fps with a 1.025 3 shot group (this rifle and bullet with Hunter or H414 is a .75 all day shooter)
30-06 57.4gr under a 150gr Nosler Partition from a Ruger M77 2900fps with a 1.110 3 shot group (this rifle and bullet with IMR4350 or 4320 is a .8 all day shooter)
30-06 57.4gr under a 165gr Sierra GK from a Ruger M77 2844fps with a 1.000 3 shot group(this is about average for this rifle and bullet combo no matter the powder)
Small sample sizes for sure as all velocities are average for 3 shots and I could get all of those loads better with time to play with them. All in all this powder dose have potential to be accurate with the added benefits that it burns clean and reduces copper fouling.
