I have been running in circles trying to find the vintage of a Smith & Wesson Model 36 (snub-nose 38). The internet is an amazing thing but you sure can spend a lot of time on dead-end searches. I have not run into this problem with other manufactures but this one has me stumped. Very unofficial site seems to put this vintage at 1977 to 1978. If any of you know how I can verify this with serial number J630XXX please let me know.

Hello SnapShot; Have you tried contacting Smith and Wesson? I am certain that they have extensive records just like the Colt Firearms Corp.

Larry, This may be of some help and I'll see what else I might find that could be of help. This site The Smith & Wesson Collectors Association could be of great help as it was founded by Smith & Wesson Historian Roy Jinks. Look this one over and see if this does or does not help.

Thanks guys. These are a help. I started with S&W but they charge for their information and we are trying to just find out the manufacture date and did not want to spend money to answer the question. All of the other manufactures we have contacted have provided this simple information through their customer service people at no charge. Thanks again for your assistance.

I know their exists a Smith & Wesson forum where a bunch of knowledable guys hang out, they may be able to help you. Not sure this forum is connected with the factory in any manner.
