JB: We live under a similar law in California, though I don't know that the punishment is that drastic. I don't like that law but aside from a little inconvenience I really don't notice it. The thing I don't like about it is gives the government information which they can and may misuse.

This is the case in most European countries since the 1970's. One of the first EU general laws that ever had became effective. In essence nobody is allowed to own a gun. If you want a gun(permit) you are in a privileged situation, you are "allowed" to own a gun while the rest of your fellow citizens are not. This places you in a "special box"...... This is why nearly all EU countries have some sort of registration of gun ownership.
