I found H 414/W 760to work very well with 165 Sierras also I tried some H 4350 and Re 19 with some success. For my Garrand with 150s I used IMR4895 and was happy however I didn,t check velocity and accuracy was adequate to hit a target at 300 yds.

bob,
For 165 Sierras I found Accurate 4350 to be superior. I have also turned in some good groups with RE-15.
Pardon my ignorance on the Garrand. I was of the impression that IMR-4895 was the required powder to prevent damaging the operating rod. Has 4350 caused any problems?

Mule, 4895 is at least the sentimental favorite, as it was good enough for Uncle in a couple of scrapes. Basically, it's all I've used in the Garand, but 4350 is mentioned. It's interesting, but the later Hornady manuals have a separate section devoted to Garands. You're right about the op rods-they were the most difficult part to make. The guys who had the knack for bending them were paid a very high rate on a piece-work basis. I have always been kind to mine !

Mule, thanks old age has struck again! I believe the 4350 will work but it was not what I meant.

Haven't shot any of them yet Bob. I wont get the chance to shoot till tomorrow afternoon. I have to break these up into smaller batches so I don't wind up with a huge fouling issue.

Ok since it is supposed to rain like all kinda hell this weekend I took advantage of the early morning hours since it was not raining yet. I shot 25 of the Ramshot Big Game loads this morning and I am not really feeling it. I ran the 52.0-53.2gr loads and well was under impressed to say the least. I will finish a cycle with this powder which tops out at 55.5gr with 165gr bullets but unless it really improves I will shelf the powder for another use. I have my rifle barrel soaking now so I can maybe shoot some tomorrow with my W760 load. Thinking about running an IMR4350 cycle at some point. Looking to see if I can trade up a #1 of Suprformance to try as well.

I'm really happy with the H414/W760 in my M 70 '06 very good accuracy and I don't fall asleep waiting for the 165 gr. bullet to go down the 24" barrel. With out checking my records I think it's somewhere around 2,900 fps+/-.

Seems that old guys (like me) that shoot old guns (like our Garands) use old powders (like 4895).

You're right Snapshot however my "modern" M70 was made in '36 or '37 first year of production. The rifle is even older than me but it sure likes the newer powders.

Bob I have a W760 cycle waiting to be shot I just had higher expectations for the Big Game so it was a bit of a let down. I have it shelved for some other work at some point in the future. I did manage to scrounge up enough brass to be able to run a cycle with IMR4350 (Hodgdon Data) and 165gr SIE GK's as well. Now it is just a matter of getting enough time to catch up on all the shooting I need to do.

Over the last few days I have ran a cycle with IMR4350 using Hodgdon data and must say I was pleasantly surprised. Started at 56.0gr and ran up to 59.3gr and all the groups with one exception were between .95 and 1.095 5 shot groups. The lone exception was 59.0 which held at .75 so I will reshoot that group to confirm that number. I still have a W760 cycle to run and I managed to trade up a couple LBS od Suprformance to try also. However I think I might have found my load.

IMR 4064 and 4350 work decent in the 06. I've been working on testing Rl15 as well

I finally managed to reshoot that 59gr load of IMR4350 and it held close to that .75 mark. I will still shoot my 760 cycle but I think I have found my load.

Not terribly surprised. Over 40 years ago I was load testing 760 against IMR version of 4350....not with 30-06 but with .243win! Found my load with the stick powder. That said, 760 is great powder for use with a progressive.....and not bad at all with some rifles using the best single station loading practices.
I remember my first foray with 760 was almost unbelievable. I was using a Lee Target Loader, including the little dipper that came with it, and made 20 rounds for my then brand new .243 Remington Mohawk 600. The first 5 rounds went in the same hole at 100 yards! I didn't measure group size....as I was a beginner shooter, hunter, reloader, etc........but I think that experience was the reason I continued with the hobby! 40 years later that memory is still vivid.....my brother was looking through a spotting scope at my target.....and accusing me of missing all but the first round. Walking out to the target proved different. (Beginners luck, pretty sure).

GWS I am still going to run a W760 cycle as well as a Suprformance cycle and maybe an IMR4064 cycle. But it will be hard to beat the IMR4350 load I have found and I just went book spec seating depth. So if I choose I can still play with seating depth I borrowed a chrono for the weekend and will run the best W760 and that IMR4350 load with it at some point this weekend.

Ok so I finally had a day and a half with out any rain so I got to run my W760 cycle I did cheat a little I started at 52gr (Hodgdon Data) instead of 51gr. I found one fairly good charge weight at 56.2 that held sub moa .905. I am still going to run a Superformance cycle but I think the IMR 4350 load I have will be what I go with unless something wows me.

Again not surprised. W760 is something I'm going to reexamine though, now that I use a progressive more and more for even rifle, because it is such a powder-measure-friendly powder, but my favorite rifle powder up to now is still IMR4350 for .243 and .308, except for my AR10 IMR4895 loads. Never tried 4350 in the autoloader ... skeered of banging the bolt around too hard. For my .223 Ar I have Varget and TAC to compaison test......all I need is time and fewer interruptions!

Ok so I tried another powder last week end Hodgdon Superformance form 55.0-58.5gr and well I put it back on the shelf for a rainy day. I am sticking with IMR4350 and 165 Sie GK's. Up next a new load for my 25-06 and completing a couple other things I started earlier this year.

Ken it I didn't chrono it so I don't know about velocity it wasn't really all that bad accuracy wise it just wasn't as good as the IMR4350 load I worked up. Have a buddy here that swears by IMR4064 under 150-165gr bullets in his 06 so I might try that but it would really have to wow me to make me switch.
