As hand loaders we each take extreme pride in our ammo or we wouldn't do it. Even my cheap plinking ammo I still deem more accurate and reliable than factory ammo. For this reason I carry my hand loads with premium bullets for my self defense guns. Generally when reading through gun forums, everyone recommends carrying store bought ammo instead. It is claimed that 1) the factory ammo is reliable (I trust my hand load more than factory), and 2) that lawyers won't rip you to shreds over the load data (lawyer buddy of mine has supposedly looked and can't find any information about a hand loader getting in any legal issue from using reloads).
So the question becomes do you use hand loads as self defense ammo, and what is your reason for your decision?

I don't load for my 9mm & .45ACP pistols I have the dies and components but was given a large amount of factory premium defense ammo for both. I do load for my revolvers though.

Well my plinking loads are to hit center mass as I get the load to what the gun likes. I don't load for bull's eye type shooting. Do i try to get the load that close? I try to. I have no problem if the need should arise I would use these loads for the purpose of self defence.

I had this discussion with my lawyer. His advice is that the issue would most likely not come up if I wind up on trial for defending myself in a legal carry or home defense situation. However, a "non-modified" weapon and factory "self-defense" ammo remove all possibility of the other lawyer digging into my loading with the intent to do more harm than necessary. Additionally he recommends no t-shirts or bumper stickers with all the cool saying on them. He says the chances are they will dig into any and all background and lifestyle that points to or can be twisted to show my having a vigilantly mindset or being one of the "gun nuts" just looking for a place and reason to shoot someone. He says the legal aftermath following the need to defend yourself will be unbelievable. Ain't the American Legal System great?

Larry, What your lawyer stated pertains to any method that one would use for self defence. It is the opposing attorney's job to make you the bad guy. Asked a lawyer on how he would understand a certain item and he said it depends. I asked how and his answer was this. It depends if he was prosecuting or defending.

I agree our system is very warped and twisted. I also totally agree with the cool bumper sticker logos that make us look like a trigger happy man hunter. I don't have any on my truck only because I don't want people breaking windows again looking for gun paraphernalia. As far as loading rounds "to do more harm" I do pray that I will never have to fire my gun in self defense and take the life of another, but by pulling that trigger I accept the fact that I want the most deadly round in my chamber and if not I will keep repeating the cyle of pulling the trigger and hoping the next deadly round to do the job. At that point an empty chamber and a mag swap or a bad guy with a toe tag is the only acceptable outcome. Thankfully in Kentucky with the Castle doctorine ( my home is my castle and all killing inside those walls in SD is justified) I only worry about my families safety not the legal ramifications. My best friend and deacon in our church shot a fellow that was breaking in his home heavily armed and on meth. The only thing the prosecution harped on before they failed to indict him on any charges was his idpa style of shooting (2 to the body and 1 to the head). This friend spent $0 money and only took off from work the day of the jury return of charges so we could celebrate. There was significant stress about his firearms and the what ifs that could happen, but all turned out well with the exception of the misguided man loosing his life.

If I could find a good source of Federal HST projectiles, I'd load my own self-defense rounds. The only source I've found for those projectiles is a place that has "pull downs".

Springfieldxdm ~ I agree with all you've noted here. I was just sharing some input for a discussion with a lawyer out lining worst case things to expect (here is California all the bad guys have more protection than the good guys). The Good LORD willing I will never have to be in that position but I am ready if necessary. ~ SnapShot
