After a lot of long contemplation I am finally really looking to move the one and only MAGNUM I still own. It just so happens to be one of my favorite rounds the 7mm Rem Mag. I have been talking to a guy here I know that has a Ruger M77 in 358 Win that was a limited run from sometime in the 70's. With me adding the 338 Federal which has the power of the 7 RM in a short action rifle I see no real need to keep it. That said the question becomes do I really need a 358 Win with the afore mentioned 338 Federal now in the stable. My biggest concern is the first time I have a deer standing just a little further than I am comfortable with another rifle will I kick myself in the A$$ for trading my 7RM. With my past history with caliber I need some advice. I offered up a different trade but he wasn't interested in adding anything from my stock but my 7RM. So tell me what would you do?

In discussions of this nature I have few words of advice . . . NEVER GET RID OF ANY FIREARMS.I know we all have to deal with budgets and finances but over the years I have "kicked myself" as you put it for letting go of firearms for many different reasons. At the time there was a need or it looked like a good way to get something different but I have ALWAYS wished I had the old gun for some reason or another. I feel these pangs every time I attend a gun show and see something that I no longer have. Good luck in making up your mind . . . maybe buy one more Lotto ticket before you have to make the decision, then you can keep the old one and afford the new one.

I agree. I sold a series 70 .45ACP Gold Cup, and lost a .45 convertible Ruger Blackhawk to a burglar.. Been kicking myself for the last 20 years for both, as they are very difficult to replace classics. Now then, that said, the 7mm mag isn't that hard to find another, is it? You can buy a new one tomorrow. How about that Ruger M77 .357 Win.? Not so easy to come across is it? Now I'm not factoring in the "old friend" attachment, but if you can deal with that, get the .357! Shoot it at anything that moves up to 300 yards, and when you decide you need to "reach out and touch something" way out there, buy a new 7mm Mag, 300 Mag, or even a .338 Lapua!!!

Chuck, As GWS stated if ya trade it you can always get another rifle in that caliber. The 7mm Rem. Mag is along with the 300 Win. Mag still popular calibers to have. I have sold and traded firearms and yes I wish I could get some of them back but situations dictated what I had to do.

Chuck, In reading about the .358 Winchester and the .338 Federal it's like reading about virtually the same cartridge. The one property the 7mm has is the longer range capability, do you need that over 300 yd ability? It seems that all 3 out to about 300 yds. are in the same league while the .338 and the .358 have an advantage with heavier game at that range. What kind of country do you hunt the most? What kind of animals are you after most? Personally I think I'd pass. If the .358 were a pre'64 model 70 that would be another story but keeping the 7 allows you flexibility. Besides with no 7 you'd have to change your handle! P.S. If you had to ask us pass!

Bob if I do trade I will still have a 7 bore with another due back in September. I think that the trade is more for the novelty of a turn bolt 358 Win. As for the 338 Federal yes it is a 300 maybe a tad more rifle even with the 20 inch tube. I will continue to ponder on it maybe try to come up with a different trade.

Well as Gary said the 7s are pretty common so replacing it shouldn't be too hard, when the time comes.

I am with SnapShot, I never will part with any of my guns. (Exception, would be a Hi-Point that shoots around corners, but I would never have one of them in the first place!) I lost several guns in a nasty fire a dozen or so years ago, and just recently replaced the last one, just got to shoot it for the 1st time this weekend. Oh what fond memories it brought back! Truthfully my guns are to be my kids' inheritance, this way I wont be tempted to buy the Corvette that will only depreciate in value!

No Bob his asking price went up from bare gun for bare gun to my gun with scope and rings plus 50 reloads. The rings sure they wouldn't fit anything but another Browning AB III the scope not a chance I just traded up the scope a new in box Vortex Diamond HP 3x12x42 with their BDC reticle and I DO NOT GIVE AWAY RELOADS.

Sounds as though he was a little too proud of his rifle.

358 Win Model 81 Browning for $795 looks fun for a woods gun, but I'd never have a place to use it here in New Mexico/Colorado territory.

GWS the wife just bought one of these for my nephew for his birthday. I wanted it more because it was a turn bolt then for the caliber.

Ok so I finally did get a trade worked out just not the one I had hoped for. I swapped my 7RM and load data for 15lbs of Alliant powders all #5's RL15, 22, 26 plus 50 new in box 25-06 Norma brass and 400 117gr Sierra PH's. Not the trade I had hoped for but I know the guy I traded with very well (my cousin) so I am good with it.

GWS if you figure in shipping which would be a Haz-Mat x2 plus the bullets and brass he has about what the step son had in the rifle and rings since I swapped his for this rifle. I wasn't over joyed but what the hell I think I made out even though I don't use RL15 I can always use it for barter later on.

Chuck, that #15 ought to be good in a 7-08 if you still have one, or in any cartridge, other than magnum, with medium to light bullets. By the way that is one interesting trade!

I'd trade my Varget for some Reloader 15 anytime. The 15 is just what I need for my .22-243....just can't find it locally right now. I know you did alright monetarily, but you don't get attached to brass and ammo like you do a 7mm Remington Mag rifle! OK! the picture of the .22-243 round below does evoke some emotion....Over-bores do that (to me anyway), but it's the Custom Mauser behind the round that makes that even possible. So........we know what comes next.....what brand of 7mm Rem. Mag are you going to replace it with!!

Bob I have tried RL15 in 7-08 and 308 and just don't really care for it. I have always found loads that worked better.
GWS the only rifle I ever developed any kind of attachment to was a pre 64 Winchester Mod 70 in 257 Roberts. That rifle belonged to my granpaw and it was the rifle I learned to shoot with killed my first deer with it too. I lost that rifle in a house fire a few years ago and have looked off and on to replace it but a pre 64 Win Mod 70 in 257 Roberts in the same shape (90%) as that one is very pricey. As for a trade Varget for RL15 I will think on it for a bit and get back to ya. For now I have no plans for another 7RM any time soon I have another rifle that can fill the void.

GWS it is a powder that can cover several calibers from 243 up to the 300 & 338WM. I really think it shines in the 7-08 with heavy for caliber bullets. It is the best powder I have tried in 7-08 with bullets 150grs and heavier. Since I shoot a ton on 160 Speer BTSP's in that caliber it comes in very handy for me. I shot my smallest 3 shot 100yd group ever with those bullets and powder .397 C-C. Load was 47.5gr of Hunter, Norma brass, Win WLRM primers and 160gr Speer BTSP bullets. The load I just mentioned is for the caliber and bullet weight pretty quick the last time I ran in with a chrono I got 2731fps ave with an ES of 14fps and SD of 9fps. This load was fired from a Rem 700 SPS Varmint with a factory 24" tube with the bullet seated .015 off the lands according to my Hornady OAL gage.
This powder dose have a couple draw backs if you do not spike it with a small amount of graphite powder it is very touchy with static electricity and it burns very dirty with in a 7 bore leads to carbon ring build up.
