Ok so besides the cool a$$ press Hornady just released. They have also released a couple new lines of ammo. A precision hunter ammo mated with their equally new ELD-X bullets and a match line coming with their ELD match bullets. I am gonna have to give Hornady products a FRESH look.

Yes, and announcing these new plastic-tipped bullets, they admitted that their previous plastic-tipped bullets deformed some in flight, reducing accuracy! Not to mention they are insinuating that other plastic-tipped bullets deform likewise.....Noslers come to mind. The new plastic they are using now is phenolic-like impervious to heat. So the million dollar question is.......will Hornady improve their existing bullet lines to use the new plastic tips, continue to sell defective bullets, or replace those lines??

Greg, If I were them I would phase them in as the older tipped ones get sold. I don't see them scrapping what they have manufactured of the older ones. I'm sure they want to get a return on the monies spent on those that have been made. Oh I would think that Nosler will follow and change theirs also. I see these new tipped bullets winning over the long range shooter the ones that shoot 500+ yards. For me on game animals that are in the deer size range I keep it under 350 yards. In fact have yet to take deer size game beyond 200 yards and the Nosler Ballistics Tips I use in my 7mm-08 work just fine for me at the range I hunt.

Greg you just touched on something I have screamed from the high heavens about. That is this ANY TYPE OF TIP DEFORMATION AFFECTS THE ACCURACY Of A BULLET PERIOD REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE OF TIP. I have had folks bring me rifles they claim will not shoot anything. Then you look at the collection of bullets they have and you can tell they have been dropped, stepped on, or just tossed around deforming the tips. When you tell them if the leading end of the bullet is screwed up they wont shoot they look at you like you have a second head. I keep a hand full of common caliber bullets FL sized and loaded to book spec to show them. If these do not shoot better I usually run my bore scope down the barrel and find out that they need to clean their rifles better. But again from the heavens ANY TYPE OF TIP DEFORMATION AFFECTS THE ACCURACY OF A BULLET PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a side note I have a couple feelers out for 162gr 7MM and 178gr 30cal ELD and ELD-X bullets just to try them out of course...........

Give me a place to stand and a long-enough lever, and I will invariably break the lever.

Spring, although it's a small statistical sample, the article you linked confirms a lot of other stuff. When I'm casting bullets, anything with a bad base goes back into the pot. For most purposes, some imperfections elsewhere get overlooked. Chuck is right, however, in that any imperfection tends to throw things off.

This discussion takes me back to the early '60s ('61 or '62) when I got my 7mm Remington magnum. One of the first things I did was to have a bullet point protector installed in the magazine. Haven't seen one in years.

I do agree with Chuck's assessment, however I have to think that these bullets have been on the market for years and won many competitions for myself and others. I'm not sure most shooters will ever really notice a difference, key word most.
Side note I love the box o truth!!!!!!!

Spring you are correct in that most hunters will not notice this. I know a couple good ole boys here that if they can hold 3 rounds in a 2 inch circle they consider themselves good to go. I really haven't shot a ton of match bullets till the last year or so. Right off the bat I started separating them by weight then inspecting them I have also bought a bullet pointer. I can say that I am not quite as anal as a serious competition shooter but the SIE MK's I shoot the more I tweak them the better they get. Compare that to a hunting bullet at some point you hit a wall were things just stay the same and I truly believe most of that is variation in the tips and bases of these bullets. All that said I still think for what they are designed for hunting bullets are plenty accurate.
