A few months ago I put out some feelers looking for a late 40's era Mod 70 Winchester in 257 Roberts like the one I lost in the fire we had a few years back. I found one in my own backyard so to speak. A customer of ours just inherited one from his father's estate and is looking to move it. So I stopped to see it while I was out dealing with a problem customer this morning. Looks wise I would give it a 6 bluing needs some work, the stock would need refinished and bedded, the bolt has a couple small pits just in front of the bolt handle, the barrel well that thing was mirror clean and I even ran my bore scope through it. The man claims his father stopped using the rifle in the 70's and that he used it for a short time after that. He won't sell it but wants to trade and I think his asking price is to steep he wants my scoped Winchester Mod 70 Ultimate Shadow 7RM and my Rem 700 SPS Varmint 308 plus all my load data for just his bare rifle. Personally I think he is asking to much despite what they book for but man I would love to get my hands on another one of these. So what do you guys think?

Give me a place to stand and a long-enough lever, and I will invariably break the lever.

I like the idea of an M70 of that era and caliber, but I suspect you're going to let this guy bask in its glow for a while. Personally, I wouldn't even counter-offer, but just let him come to reality on his own. I'll be interested in what the other guys come up with ! (Good luck. That just sounds like a cool rifle.)

Pooh it's the same make model and caliber I learned to shoot with and killed my first deer with. You are correct he will get to hang on to it for now. I was thinking it would be a nice rifle to have for my kids as they got older if they stay interested in hunting. Just not at any were close to what he wants for it. Maybe he comes around maybe he doesn't who knows.

Chuck, given your description I'd let him stew! I would not make that trade but you could offer him $ 1,000.00 more or less, there are 11 .257s on GB 8 are pre '64 M70s and one has a buy it now of $2,650 and they are all in better shape than you describe!
