My son was looking at the LGS used gun rack the other day and came across a Ruger M77 Mark II in .257 Roberts. Last night he went to pick up a dozen arrows that he had bought there and low and behold this Ruger followed him home. They also had 1 set of RCBS dies on the shelf that needed a new place to stay. He has had his heart set on wanting a .257 Roberts for a couple of years now but much like me he hates to part with his cash. Now comes the hard part, where to find reasonably priced brass.

Jb, If you can't find brass I'd just buy +P ammo, shoot it and have fun then load it. I had to do just that when I got my .257 rob'ts several years ago.
I have been using W/W +P brass and just neck sizing trim to max length - 0.001" and using Hodgdon Hybrid 100 V powder with 117 - 120 gr. bullets and CCI 200 primers. Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks Bob. I think the LGS had Hornady +P on the shelf, 117 gr SST if I remember correctly.

JB, That's one caliber that has had my interest for several years. Maybe some day I might get one.

JB it must be a son thing as my son wants my Hart barreled 7-08 to follow him home for CHRISTMAS. That said the boy is still a tad to small for that rifle so the wife wants to get them each a Hart Barreled 243 ordered for next year. Me I think until they decide that they are going to stick with hunting we need to wait on that LOL I will loose this one for sure.

If you are looking for brass,I found a group In Facebook called The Brass Bank. Also Armands Brass Supply. Both offer all kinds of calibers, depending on availability. Members can also post whatever they have to trade or sell. I picked up M1 carbine, 44 mag, 45 Colts all cleaned, de capped and ready to load. Prices were reasonable and the service was fast. Good luck! Lex

lexusmgr, I bought him 2 boxes of factory ammo for Christmas from the Sportsman's Guide to get him started. He has bought brass for his .40SW on that site before. Most of it looked good but some had the "Glock" bulge on them and needed to be tossed. Thanks for the info.

Alright I'm looking for a little info from all of you very wise men.
My son was sighting in his new used Ruger M77 .257 Roberts this past weekend. When he was ejecting the fired cases they all would only follow the bolt out of the chamber about 1 inch before falling off of the bolt. My first thought was something is wrong with the extractor but later I got to thinking how Hornady had QC issues with their .22 Hornet brass. I went and looked in my Hornady manual and the rim of the case head should measure .473 but his brass measures .467-.469. My question is: would this difference in size cause the case to fall off from the bolt or should we have the rifle looked at by a gunsmith?
Does anyone have any .257 Roberts brass they could measure just to see how it compares?
Thanks a lot.
John

John, Is this with all brass or is this with a certain brand? My question is. Is this happening with all brands or a certain one? Also have you tried other brands of ammo and other brass as in reloads? If yes to my questions then I would have a smith look at your rifle and also contact Ruger ans see what they suggest.

jbnut, I just measured a half dozen or so Winchester +P brass all fired and neck sized and they were all 0.4675" . Is that Ruger a tang safety model if so it maybe a push feed(Rem 700) as opposed to a controlled feed (Win M70) so the extractor maybe weak or the ejector is broken.

Gary he only has the Hornady brass we haven't seen any other brands on the shelf to try. But it appears that Bob's Winchester brass is about the same size.

If I remember correctly, when I was wanting a "Bob", it seemed you could make brass pretty easily from 7 X 57 Mauser.

"Bobs" do get the job done, all of us! I know .257 has not let me down. Congratulations, that is a nice looking buck and it will likely taste good.

Give me a place to stand and a long-enough lever, and I will invariably break the lever.
