Well spring will soon be here before we know it. I guess now is the time to be getting some of the prep work done to be ready to work up some new loads. I've had a new bag of Federal brass just aching to get out of the bag and see the light of day so I helped them out last night. So far I've sized them & uniformed the flash holes next I think I'll uniform the primer pockets. Sounds like a fine cold evenings project.
This is my 1st time working with new brass and I can see why it needs to be sized. Case necks are not really round when they come out of the bag.

There does seem to be more deformed brass since they've gone to bulk bags. I don't recall having the problem when it came in 20/50 rnd. boxes but also have noticed it with the bulk.

JB, Running new brass through the sizer will help to make all the brass uniform and you will know that each piece is.

Gary, I've sized, deburred the flash hole, uniformed the primer pockets and trimmed the cases to length. I still need to debur and chamfer the case necks. I picked up some Sierra Gameking bullets this past weekend and I have a couple of the New Enduron powders I can break open to try out.

JB, You don't state what caliber. As for the Enduron powders if by chance you are trying 4166 let me know how your results turn out. I am interested in this powder and wish to try it in the near future. The last I was to see my local guy he had this in stock.

I guess I haven't said which caliber, I'm working with my .270 Win. I have both the 4451 & 4166 powders I just haven't decided which to start with yet. I'm thinking that Chuck had recommended the 4451 for the .270 in some of his past post about the new powders. As for bullets I bought the Sierra GK 140gr Spitzer Boat Tail to try. In the past I've always used the Hornady 140 Gr BTSP but I guess it's time to venture out and try something a little different.

As Bob commented, there seems to be more work necessary when using bulk brass. I know I’m old but it seems that today all brass requires more prep work than in days past. I can understand the necks being out-of-round from bulk packaging but there are other issues. The thing I notice most is flashing on the inside of the flash holes. I don’t recall this being so common in the old days. I am amazed at finding this in brass from fired factory ammo too. Seems like you rarely found flashing in fired factory ammo when reloading. I find this common now days and am amazed at how large some of the flashing is. This is true on multiple brands of factory ammo and new unprimed brass as well. Another thing I find is flash holes being off center in the primer pocket. Some of it is considerably out of center. I don’t understand how this one happens. It would seem to me that this should be easy to control in production. I guess mass production and quality are at odds these days.
