Do I need to resize my M1 (.30-'06) ammo with a small base die?

Hi ya Max, Try your full length die first to see if you get the cases to chamber properly if not then go with the small base. I envy you for having a Garand.

Another M1 question for those of you who shoot and reload them. Is it neccessary to crimp the bullets for the M1

Bob, The military ammo had the bullets crimped. I would try a few with out crimping to see how they react during recoil. You might have to try a few rounds then measure like the last two to see if you have any bulet set back or not then go from there. I have shot them but never had the chance to load for any.

I have never had a problem with needing small base dies for my m1. I use rcbs dies in my rockchucker and everything is fine. All chamber and fire just right. I do crimp with a lee factory crimp die. It's not a firm crimp, rather light but really just to make me feel better. I have always crimped them, so I don't know what happens if you don't. An old reloader told me if the military does it to them, that you can't really mess them up by doing it too. With my m1, I am only concerned with getting minute of coyote instead of 1/4 moa.

emoticon-misc-028As I have indicated in various post I am working on a bunch of '06 ammo for M1 Garrands. I did something I don't normally do and took a Military spec recipe for 150 gr. bullets and went straight to it with out the ladder approach. Shot a couple of clips this morning to check pressure and function. 150 gr. Hornady FMJBT 50grs.IMR 4895 function was perfect and no indication of high pressure even with a very slight crimp. Thanks for all the in put!

Gary, That is the next step. Today was let's see if they go bang not boom and eight times in a row with out a hitch. For their intended purpose a 3" group will be adequate! I may try to see what the rifle is capable of later but for right now I don't need to spend a lot of time trying to get 1 moa.

To be on the safe side. if it was me, I would use a small base sizing die.

Bob ~ I have to go along with "springfieldxdm" comments above. In fact his comments could have been written by me; including the recommendation from "an old reloader" and the wisdom about military electing to crimp. It was many years ago when I started reloading and the Garand was one of the first rifles I loaded for. In those days I was taught to crimp and had never heard of small base dies. The Garand is a very forgiving weapon and in my experience will digest just about anything you feed her. I do not own small base dies for my '06 reloading but I do use the Lee Crimp Die (but very lightly). It's been many years and a lot of ammo . . . so far so good. ~ SnapShot (Larry)

I use small-based dies on my .308 now, only because I have to. I bought a Remington version of a DPMS 308 AR. (Obviously made to spec for Remington as an accurate "hunting" rifle. My experience was interesting......I bought 2 boxes of commercial ammo for starters, to see how it would shoot. Remington Core-Lokt, and Federal blue box. Not surprisingly the Remington ammo fed like water. The federal factory blue box, unfortunately, did not. It went bang, jam....yup...1 round and a jam, repeat. Bolt would not close on the second one......retried for an hour. Examination revealed that the shoulder length was fine, bullet length was fine, but the base was on the tight side. (this was NEW ammo) So...I thought if factory Federal wouldn't feed well, full-length conventional sizers would give it trouble......and it did. So I bought a small-base sizer and the reloaded ammo fed just as well as factory Remington. Now then, this was an exception! 1. You wouldn't have a hunting rifle's smallish and accuratized barrel and chamber on an M1 Garrand unless it was rebarreled that way. Not likely. 2. The generous chambers in Military rifles are generous to feed anything the soldier may have pick up off the ground.....the Remington R25 was not made to be a military clone...its a hunting rifle and is accurate as hell. (the ONLY reason I didn't take it back, screaming) Bottom line? I would be VERY surprised if you couldn't use regular dies. To be honest, I would have bought a regular military style DPMS and not the "Remington Hunters Special", had there been one for sale that month! It was a "selfie" Christmas Present a week or so after Obama got elected the first time.......I had no idea there had been a panic run on AR's of all kinds following election day. By the time I was looking for my AR....the only one in town was the "commercial" Remington R25. (Christmas was scrooged.....except.....well it was very purty in its camo jacket. )

Well the long and the short of this is, given the very reason for the ammo and due to the fact it may end up in different M1s, I Sized with a small base die.
I appreciate ALL of the responses and weighed them each to come to my conclusion.
