Been a while since I've been on but the 6.5-06 I had built seems to be a shooter. 9 twist semi varminter contour barrel 27¼" long on a interarms Mark X Mauser action. Manage to harvest a deer with it this past deer season. I was surprised how hard it hits.

Assuming that's the deer it's a nice buck you shot. Now what are you going to do with your .270 ?

I'm going to rebarrel the 270to 6 mm-06 or 338-06 probably. I got a doe this past season. I couldn't get any decent shots on a legal buck. Either to brushy or running mach1. Meat in freezer at least.

That .338-06 was interesting but I ended up with a.325WSM the rifle had a scope I wanted all for half the price of the scope!

Savage, 6.5-06 or 338-06 either one is a fine round to have. the 6.5 would be awesome on oper plains antelope. The 338 would be a good choice for black bear to elk and even moose. It would at least for me what am I going to hunt and go from there.

Well now, it's about a year gone by since we talked about a 6.5-06 and the don't need but want bug is in the infectious stage. The LGS has a beautiful 6.5-06 or as this one is called a 6.5-.270 Gibbs on a M.70 action in a beautiful checkered walnut stock and a Leupold 3X9 mounted. The package includes brass, several hundred bullets and most importantly RCBS dies. I may have to go to the emergency room for an antidote.

Bob, I'm going to give you a link from another forum that discusses about fire forming to a Gibbs and to me from what I read it seems more work thanfire forming to an Ackely chamber. This is just one discussion on the subject. I'm sure there is more out there. www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/5690319/1

Bob, Hacker is suggesting the reasonable road. My take: You probably don't "need" it. Put that silly notion aside-it just looks like a lot of fun, and I suspect that all of us like shaking down a new to us rifle ! My suggestion: if the infection doesn't subside, refuse treatment and fill out the 4473 ! Let us know how it works !

I forgot to tell you I have to go by the LGS to get to the ER and I'm not sure of the incubation time!
Gary, from what I've found out it is simply an '06 or .270 brass necked down and fire formed like Ackley's. This is not the .270 Gibbs necked down.

Just a word of warning, I learned form a recent experience that my LGS does not accept Blue-Cross. Better check your coverage.

Well in about 10 days that darn rifle will follow me home (Stage 4 want virus), its always terminal. Turns out, after some research, that the rifle is in fact a Ackley 6.5-06 improved built by Keith Stegall an old time master stock maker and gunsmith. The .270 entered the picture because it is easier to neck the .270 down. If anyone wants 140 gr. .264/6.5 bullets let me know as I got 900 in the deal package and after July we have to be lead free for hunting so I'd like to unload a bunch, let me know.

One more interesting ,at least to me,item is he stopped building rifles in about 1985 yet this rifle looks to have been built yesterday! The barrel has his initials KS stamped in just in front of the receiver.
Yes pooh I will be spending the time looking at load data. "Peers" as though time has come to acquire Quick Loads, shoulda got it long ago any way.
