Now you ask how can the country be hypercritical. Australia wants to be the top arms exporter. Now according to the article that I'll give the link to talks about military type weapons. Remember Australia took guns away from a huge portion of the population. Australia wants to be #1 exporter of weapons but they don't trust their own citizens to have a firearm for protection.
