Ok, here's a tossup question: Has anyone goofed around with the reflex sights at all ? I'm thinking it may be a good alternative for my 30-30 Contender barrel. (Remember, I'm here in New Hamster where men are men and ranges are short and it tends to be brushy.) Any thoughts or suggestions ?

I bought a cheap one in a tube (red dot) for my Ruger Target 3 .22 pistol several years ago. That was a hoot! I think the newer open lens designs would be even more fun. I think a great use for one would be any brush gun or even an AR15/Mini 14.
That said, I haven't used one on a rifle......but I'm sure on pins and needles to see how it goes with you!

Pooh, I have not used one either, there is a pretty good comparison on You Tube. The comparison seems to be oriented towards mil/leo though. Have fun with the sight and compose a complete in depth report for our consumption. Yeah right!

This sounds kind of crazy, but I'm thinking along the lines of finding a cheap and/or used one to try on my 10-22, just to see if I like the concept. As much as I enjoy doing R&D for you guys, I'm trying to figure out if this is the real deal.

Pooh ~ It looks like you’re committed to this one and from the responses above (and mine here) you are duly authorized to proceed with the testing and reporting of your findings. On behalf of the team, thanks for taking on this project; and we look forward to your forthcoming, in-depth report.

I use them on my AR-15 .223 and Mechtech Glock carbine for three gun matches. I also have it on my AR-15 .22 for steel matches. I love them, for my is makes target acquisition very fast. They are for precision shooting but for combat accuracy they are awesome.

Nothing is funner than to get a buddy with .22 pistols (or rifles) so doctored, go out in the hills and throw a 12 gauge husk as far as you can, and take turns with the red dot on the itty bittie shot gun husk. Shoot it (it bounces away) buddy shoots it, it bounces away further......you miss your buddy tries to make it go further....you get the picture! Whoever shoots it and makes it disappear wins. Repeat....of course!

Red-Dot makes it easier but I remember playing that game back in the iron-sight days . . . but I'm old

So, almost exactly fifteen months later... I had been looking around for one at a reasonable price point and that wasn't a total pieced of junk. I ended up picking up a Burris Fast Fire II, which is moderately priced, and became even more so through their participation in a hunter ed instructor program. The unit seemed really well thought out-there were neat touches, like their mounting screws having torx heads. (I'd just finished wrestling with TC's shallow little slot heads, so I was really appreciative.) The mounting plate mounts on a Weaver base just fine, and seems solid. When mounted, the unit came up to eye level and I had a good cheek weld. Eye relief isn't critical, and the dot (4 moa) isn't intrusive
You may recall that I was putting this on a Contender Carbine barrel in .30-30, with the object of using it here in New Hamster, where ranges are short. I had a perfect no-wind morning at the range, and was the only one at the range, which is how I generally prefer things ! I dialed it in with some 150gr Sierra handloads with little fuss or bother. From sitting I was getting ~2" at 100. I also tried some of my lighter loads (311041 cast with....Unique-you knew that was coming...) and with the 100 yard sight settings, settled in ~ 1" high at 50.
All in all, I like what I've seen so far. I can't vouch for long term durability, but it can't vouch for mine, either. I like Burris's Forever Warranty, or whatever they call it.
If I were doing it again, I might spring a few extra pesos for the newer Fast Fire III. Seems to be the same concept, although I think elevation and windage might be easier to adjust, and battery replacement seems to be a little easier. (They claim the battery is good for 4.000 hours or so-I haven't owned the thing for that long.)
For its intended purpose, it looks good. I think Dan pretty much nailed it when he opined it wasn't a precision instrument, but good for short and quick work. I think after a reasonably short learning curve, I'll feel comfortable on game shots out to 100,
So there.

Thanks for your update report. I'm looking at dot sights or a reflex for on my single shot 30/30. i just need to find funds just to go looking. I'll have to look over the Burris models.

Hacker, Burris also offers discounts to first responders. Not sure how active you are these days, but it might be worth looking into.

I’ve played with lasers, red-dot tubes and reflective sights on some different handguns. The closest I have come to using one on a rifles is a Sig RedDot Tube on my Ruger Pistol Caliber Carbine. It’s mounted with a high base so I can co-witness the iron sights. From my limited use so far I like that set up. Age has driven me to looking at these new sights but I really felt good a few weeks ago when I had to qualify for a Rifle Instructor Course and shot it all with an old lever action rifle and peep sights. It was a good day
