Well guys I made it to the range today. My buddy called and asked if I was good enough to go shoot. I said I need to get out and do something so we went. Took the 1911 and 100 rounds that I loaded a while back. I was close to tears as it has been quite sometime since I got out to do anything. What a joy since it has been months to get out to do anything. Those loads did fine at the combat line.

That is great to hear! I assume, since you posted about shooting, you remembered which end of the gun to point down range.

Hacker, I know that one of the high points of my recovery was sneaking off to the range (had to be a cold day, so I wouldn't get stuck in the mud !) with a smith .22 revolver. Not the best groups I'd ever fired, inch wise, but maybe the most satisfying. I thought I'd forgotten how ! In any event, this is a good first step ! Whoo hoo !

Hmmmmmmm.......I haven't been shooting since my carpal tunnel operation.......just happens that the hand that holds the pistol is the hand they sawed on..........thinking.......I ought to at least try it. Thanks for the brain jump start! Wonderful that the outing was a good experience!
I've only tested the handle of my reloading press so far.....which is why I've pestered you guys recently on my new press setup.

Wow, I've been away a while and a recent email prompted me to check in. Looks like I'm not alone when it comes to medical issues.
I needed a valve job. Didn't need the blood clot, stroke, 9 additional surgeries, 90 days hospitalized, multiple rounds of rehab and the continuous doctor visits that came with it. A never ending story it was. I am told to avoid heavy recoil. Vision changes and slow muscle response have ruined my trap and skeet games. Haven't gotten back into pistols, but I'm enjoying rimfire rifles more. I also plan to plant myself in a deer stand this fall. One good thing,,I,m down 40 pounds.
To the rest of the group with health problems, I wish you the best and continued good health. I have become an unabashed believer in the power of prayer.

Wow, was an understatement! You're obviously tougher than most! Still here after all that. No valve jobs here....and the double heart bypass is 10 years ago now. But I still remember......and women think having a baby is bad. Good to have you back! Have a friend who had a valve job.....he just barely made it, but I don't think he's out of the woods.....can't get his blood pressure up, nor his electrical stabilized. Prayer is real for sure, but God has a plan for us as well and here is only the first part of it. I fully expect to see you all one day..... Good to have you back, mule! Wondered where you went....

Couldn't help but thinking that we're all probably grateful not only to get to the range, but also to get *back* ! Keep the faith !

WOW indeed Mule. Yes I concur that prayer does indeed help. We all must keep up our faith as Greg stated God is in the drivers seat.

Hacker I don't remember what rifles you shoot. I put together some 30-WCF and 308 Win cast boolits over light charges of Unique. Low recoil. Reasonably accurate. Fun to shoot. Cheap. Best of all, the grand kids can shoot "Grandpas big gun" and not get the snot kicked out of them.
Wishing you continued good health. I'll remember you when I get on the beads.

Mule, in the 30-30 I like the 311041 (sometimes with sometimes without gas check) a dollop of Unique (what a surprise !) and a primer from a batch (date stamped February 1961) I picked up somewhere. CE Harris wrote a great article on using similar powders-his big choice was Red Dot. It's around online. The earlier Lyman Cast Bullet Handbooks have a lot of good choices. There are times you don't need the throaty roar and assertive kick of a full house load ! Did I mention cheap ?

poohzilla, I have a quantity of hard cast, pointy, 175 gr bullets I once traded some soft roof flashing for. Generally shot them with a gas check. Because of the pointy design, my 30-30 becomes a two-shooter. No issues in the 308 Mauser. The Contender doesn't care. Lately, before I got sick, I am trying to use up a stash of Berry, I think, 125 gr, plated .311" bullets left over from my SKS days. 12 grains of Unique is my load.
Somewhere I have recorded a 45-70, 405 gr cast bullet mouse fart load I shot in a trap door. I'll post up when I find it.
I also burn up old primers purchased at yard sales and farm auctions. I use good stuff for hunting ammo.

Mule, the packaging on those primers is a thing of beauty ! I haunt the bargain tables and other sources, but I always feel bad because the presence in those situations suggests that there's a dead handloader in the chain of title.

Poohzilla,
I feel exactly the same way. I make myself believe I have saved them from the landfill and putting them to use as intended.
I did trade off a couple empty boxes with wooden trays. After I had used the primers of course.

Mule, on the other hand,if the situation were reversed, I'd want the stuff to go to a good home.
