As all of you have probably heard, we have a few fires going on out here. The Ranch fire ,about 375,500 acres, only burned 2,500 - 3,000 acres on our place. The best news is our house/cabin compound was saved due to a wedding in mid June so the grasses were short and matted and the road I had widened caused the air tankers to try a couple of drops and an engine company or helicopter did the rest . Now it is time to salvage log the property so all in all we will benefit but right now it's pretty black there.
While there about 4 weeks ago I watched as the fire consumed about 3,000 to 3,500 acres an hour. The smoke column was at the very least impressive.

Bob ~ Glad to hear the home front was saved . . . sounds like you are making the best of a very bad situation. Hang in there, my friend. Wish there was something we could do to help but I’ll keep you and yours in my prayers. ~Larry

.........The smoke column was at the very least impressive. It wasn't that impressive from my view here in NW New Mexico! I've had a hard time breathing your California Smoke with my Asthma. This, after having to breath Colorado Smoke for the last two months. Think I'll survive.....but it reminds me of the shortness of breath I suffered when I had heart trouble!
Hard to believe it stays airborne that far! The smoke's moving across Nevada then dropping straight into the four corners........talk about second hand smoke!
Am glad for you, the fire missing your place! How are you guys breathing? It's 10:27 PM and I'm closing all my windows again tonight....no fresh air tonight.....smelling smoke....again. Your fires obviously are not out yet!

Larry, I very much appreciate you sentiments, they need to be directed to those who lost everything and the elderly couple whose trailer had a flat tire which ignited the Carr Fire in Redding(northern California), they are traumatized to the point of not eating or sleeping.
Not to forget the families of the fallen firefighters either. In the over all disaster our loss was insignificant.
Pooh, yes it can be interesting here. Tuesday a week ago a grass fire started on the property I'm grading and my helper and I got to play firemen for a brief time. We did extinguish the fire

Fallen firefighters? How many this year!? I wasn't aware of any from the 3 Colorado fires......lots of homes in one of them tho.

GW, there have been 4 deaths,2 heavy equipment operators, 1 fire inspector, and the Battalion Chief from Utah.
The "Ranch" fire is now 392,500 acres, long since the largest in California history. The previous largest was the "Thomas" fire last fall. In a delayed answer to your breathing question, I have not experienced any issues yet even with COPD, didn't even use the inhaler. There were times when visibility was reduced to several hundred yards.

Just a follow up The "Ranch" fire is now pretty well contained at 410,000 plus acres and most of the other current large fires are fairly well contained we'll keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best in the coming months, the worst part of fire season is yet too come.

Another benefit of our recent fire is my venison hanging in the butcher's cold storage waiting to be made into steaks and sausage. I was a nice 3 pointer (western count), this brings deer season to an end for me.

Hanging already ? Good grief, I just finished my last HE course of the year (I don't do it in October-that's my scouting time !) and I just found the muzzle loaders in the other day ! Enjoy, and I hope it was a good hunt, on all the levels !

Congrats Bob on meat for the freezer. I hope my luck this year is good enough to get mine but I have yet to get my license. Yep been rough.
