From your avatar it would seem that you have a .270, that being the case I would opt for the .300. Without looking it up my guess is the .264 has better sectional density and a higher ballistic coefficient for a similar weight bullet, however I have a .300 Winchester M 70 which I really like and the selection of bullets is great. The .264 is a good round though trying to buy store bought might be tricky. Military snipers use the .300 and it will do anything the .264 will and then some.
Good luck with your conundrum, let us know how it ends.

Personally, I think Bob nailed it. I guess the only thing is that I'd give serious thought to what bullet I'd be using and pick my twist rate accordingly. Besides all the advantages Bob mentioned, I always thought .30 caliber was a real "grown up" gun. (I'm waiting for the howls of indignation ! )

Howl...... I also like the .243, ..257 Robt's, .270, 7X57mm. My real "grown up" cartridge is the .335 WSM!

Nuther howl!
Not that I don't like .30.......... I'm just a wimp I guess.....I hate shooting anything more powerful than a .308. Howl yes! Over the pain shooting a 300 Weatherby Mag....will never own one, will never miss one. Maybe some still need to prove manhood. Outgrew that in high school when manly-tough meant hanging outside the school waiting for the bell to let us in on January mornings below zero.......in a tee shirt and no coat. Kids are stupid. I outgrew that nonsense real fast! Here's one more thing I never did nor will do ever. Shoot at anything at magnum rifle distances, requiring the need to haul an elk off a steep mountainside, a mile or more from the truck....watched it once....not even tempted.

GW, I'm in total agreement. My limit is 200 yds. regardless of the rifle I'm using.

At least I got something going ! As for me, anything over 200 yards is on paper. I'm here in New Hamster, where the only place you're going to see that far is from a mountain top or a shopping mall ! Remember, I use a 30-30, 300 Whisper, and so on. The oomphiast thing in my closet is an '06 ! (But, at least they're all .30 ! ) I'd better get back to work...

Oh, yeah, forgot my other .30......30-30 Winchester.....but that's a family keepsake from about 1900. Modern 30-30's like the Whisper? Most folks here have no use for those here. Drive out of the city limits any direction and the view is well.......cliffs 2 miles to the South above them desert prairie for 200 miles, Colorado mountains to the North, Arizona desert to the West. Angel Peak to the East....20 miles, then Ponderosas. Tree's? What's them things? Here it's Scrub Oak, and Pinon Pine "forests", excepting the Fremont Cottonwoods along the rivers. Ponderosa Pines forests 40 miles away, Spruce/Fir forests 50 miles, to the North and East. If you get tired of the scenery just drive for 30 minutes... 30-06 is the commonest deer/elk/antelope/bear cartridge here too. Followed by 270 and 308..... Deer and smaller .243 is commonest since I was born....30-30 before that. (Add Magnums for masochists, and long range studdlys)

The rifle in my avatar is a 6.5-06. the 264 win has some old school vibe to it. But the the 300 has a large assortment of options when hand loading

Once again without looking up the differences, since you already have a"264" there is no reason to get another (unless you're like me) get the .300 Winchester, either the WSM or the old timer. I understand the short version is very good as well.

I have a good friend who likes to take a 257 Weatherby Mag on deer hunts. Now there's a rifle than can reach out and touch something. I shot it at the range one day. Wow. You could feel the shock wave out of the barrel behind the rifle. Kick wasn't as bad as I was expecting, and it shot like a laser beam! I'm imagining the 264 is similar.
But I remember thinking how bad the day might be if all that powder somehow didn't make it normally out the barrel behind a bullet. I've seen accidents at the range before where a bolt was blown off, and even a 7mm mag that peeled a beautiful Remington 700 BDL barrel like a banana (that guy, my nephews son tried to shoot with a laser bore sight still plugged in), so I just get a little nervous when you got that much extra powder in a single round. I know......Cluck....Real men and their toys?!
BTW, my nephew's son came away without a scratch, unlike the similar YouTube version where the shooter was carried off on a stretcher......says volumes for the strength of the Remy Action. Don't remember what that unfortunate on YouTube was shooting.......but we good reloaders/shooters don't make those kind of mistakes!
Now....the real reason for this post. Questions:
- What's your thoughts on the differences between Winchester 264 and the Weatherby 257. How do they compare?
- And I've heard that there are actually one gun hunters who use the Winchester 300 mag for everything, from coyotes, to brown bear. Really? Thoughts?

I think both the .257 Weatherby and the .264 Winchester are over bore, I have a .257 Rob'ts that ,with the newer powders, can approximate the Weatherby performance. I wold opt for the .264 though, better bullet selection. Having a .300 I believe the one gun for everything story. Maybe a sore should after varmints and with heavy bullets it will take the brown bear.

More bullet selection is probably a good argument.....as is the ease in reloading the .264......no Weatherby shoulder.
Guess I don't need a .300......doubt I will ever see a brown bear, unless it's a brown black bear!

Since when did "need" enter the equation? Valid point....except that at my age, I "need" to not destroy or aggravate any more shoulders. The last one wasted a whole year. Both a painful and boring experience.
