Well guys I guess you have heard that there's an App for this and App for that. It seems that there's an App for almost anything. Well Lee Precision has been granted a patent for their APP and no you won't find it on the I-Phone, the Samsung Galaxy, or the Android or whatever phone they're pushing this week. Oh you won't find it on the Google Play store either. Lee's APP stands for "Automatic Processing Press. I heard of this last week from the Lee reloading group on Facebook. Here is the link to the patent and Greg since you are the resident engineer read over the patent and maybe you can sum it up in simpler terms that the rest of us can grasp. patents.google.com/patent/US10076781B1/en?oq=10076781

You got me mixed up with Bob, he's the engineer. I'm just a building designer/contractor. I did look it over and what I summed up is one word....Greek. I don't have a clue what they've invented......looks a bit light though, for reloading......maybe it's shot shell reloading. But no, they mentioned sizing bullets. Maybe it is a cast bullet sizer.
If that's what it is, somebody else will have to buy and test. I buy bullets and they usually have jackets....

This looks amazing. I don’t know how they managed to do it but from the patent information it looks like they are light years ahead of their competition. It appears that they figured out how to integrate the spline-pawl into the muller-guide so that the entire assembly is free floating. They are able to machine the components to 0.00005” tolerances. This should not only eliminate friction in the feed tubes but should allow cycle times to be a fraction of what competitors are capable of. It looks like they manage this by use of a preparatory bearing material derived from Gary’s used coffee grounds. They state that the surface is actually harder than diamonds.

You actually had me going for a minute. Shame on you. Rocket science isn't done with pot metal....I knew that.....you moved too close to Dillon didn't you?
So have you seen their new pot metal XL750 yet?

Gents, I strained my eyes on this one. The most constructive thing I can offer is that if you look at the page brought up by Gary's link, there's a place to download the PDF file, which is actually viewable by the Bifocal Set !
With that, It looks like it feeds into an open ended shell holder. The language is a little confusing, since they refer to "bullets" semmingly interchangeably with "cartridges" or "shells". I need to take another look. Golly.

Well Greg maybe I should have stated "Modification Master" since seeing what mods you have performed on your presses to have them running smoother. I looked this over again and still don't grasp what they are attempting so for me I'll just have to wait and see if they bring this out in the near future.

Greg, don't accuse me of being an engineer, I'm just like you trying to decipher and fix then construct their designs. How ever I a do have a machinery building division called Hindsight Engineering, right now working on new up dated version of a Flux Capacitor! Larry your diagnosis of the conflamegated contraption seems quite correct,Lee has done again! In other words I couldn't get it either. Sorry Gary I know lee make some good stuff but I don't do progressive in the first place and this just seem complicated. Have a good weekend all.

Sorry guys . . . couldn't help myself. Way back in school I found that if I didn't understand the material I would try to through the instructors off the track altogether. The old adage . . . if you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance; baffle 'em with . . . well you know how it goes.

Back from a Colorado camping trip with family.....one of the rules is no electronics......up there there is no internet service anyway. I'm really disapPOOnted. I figured you guys would have it all figured out by now.....especially Poo, he's one of the resident wise men here, along with engineer Bob.
Bob....bruised or cracked ribs.....horrors.....I broke all of them on one side when I was twenty six. Nothing hurts worse. Get well.
Took my .45acp and my AR10 for just in case there's a bear in camp.....thankfully no bears.....again. My brother-nlaw had one in that camp site three years ago.....that wouldn't leave....and he did have to shoot it.....had little kids present....I think it was nuts. He hauled it away from the camp 200 yards and something ate most of the carcass that night......something obviously even bigger......geeze. Nothing bigger than chipmunks this year.

Wow, bear in camp can be scary, not to mention very dangerous. I carry Bear Spray and a 454 in my camera bag on my photo shoots. I don't think they make chipmunk spray Glad you had a good trip with family; take every opportunity you get for those outings.

Okay! Read it over! I'm as confused as anyone. But hey! Might be worth preordering just to have something fun to do Christmas morning....like old times! Say 60 years ago when I was 10! How many fun toys have you got from Santa lately? ......leave it to the Lee family to rock things a little every once in a while.
Let's see, deprimer, reloading press, pocket swager, bullet sizer, and what else? all with a little automation to speed it up......where's the videos! No comprendo to me till I see a video. I hope they provide one soon.

I am waiting for the video as well. It looks like they took some of the stuff everyone is doing in a circular manner and made it linear (facilitated by the open ended shell holder I mentioned in August. The bullet sizing function appears to be tied in with the new sizing die they showed on the page. I'm sure we'll hear more !

I always thought that the good old Sizer/Lubricator would have been better if it pushed from the base and eliminated the need for nose punches. Of course this one doesn't look like there is any lubricating going on. If this does all they describe at the price they show it will become very popular quickly . . . and Christmas IS just around the corner.

Update gentlemen on Lee's APP as I stated earlier that just reading over the setup I just would say Huh!! I would like to see a video of one in action to get a grasp on what they intend to do. Well "ask and ye shall receive" yep they have updated videos on their site that shows the steps that this will perform. So gentlemen look them over and give your comments. Oh looks like shipping won't be until about Jan. 24, 2020 leeprecision.com/app-automatic-processing-press/

I guess at this point, I'm hoping Hacker will wish for a live one to show up. The vids were good as far as they went, but seemed to emphasize speed, rather than how that was achieved, or at least I'm not getting it. I'd also be interested in how they allocated materials for each part-that's traditionally been a strength of Lee. All in all, Pretty cool bit of kit. I'm just waiting to see how Greg hooks it up to a hamster wheel to make it faster !

Don't temp me! Actually, did you notice you can buy the case/bullet feeder separately?....in fact the press plus the feeder equals the Deluxe Feeder! So what does that mean to me? Yall know that I own an RCBS Summit as well as a Rock Chucker single stage. I've always wanted to figure out a feeder for the open faced Summit. Lee did it for me......what do you bet it will be childs play to buy the cheap little feeder and mod it just a little. Oh! BTW, I pre-ordered the deluxe and the Primer Pocket swager gizmo for it. Hell....you think I'd pass this up at this price....cost me just under $100 for both.....a tank and a half of gas. Video of this swager below: If it's as good as I think....my RCBS bench swager will be for sale......
The Military Primer Pocket Swager below:
My wife bought me a new recliner for Christmas....heart patient and all .......the Lee family has provided me the means to start another project......to keep me out of it! Thankyou John Lee!

No joy on the Lee APP.....I canceled the order. I'll still buy one, I'm 99 percent sure.....but they are in flux. I decided to be patient and wait till the product is stable.
You see I ordered the "Deluxe" APP plus the swager. A week ago they sent me a message saying the swager has been changed and they needed another $14 to send me one. I know that sounds like "bait and switch"....it isn't, but they weren't ready to take preorders if the product wasn't even finalized. The good part is that the "new" swager has more parts for both sized primer pockets and even has a base that can use both the new Lee APP caseholders, and the old Lee, RCBS, etc. case holders....I'm for that. However I have to admit, I doubt seriously if I will ever use crimped cases with small primer pockets.
I'm patient (big lie) so I'll wait patiently (bigger lie) until they get things right and in stock.
Sigh......My recliner beat the APP so I'm posting this in a very comfy place......I'll be happier when I can play with a new toy.
I did order another case feeder for my Pro Chucker 7. Why? Let's just say it might have something to do with the RCBS Summit Press, and what the Lee APP idea did to make my mind wheels start cranking.......may come to nothing....we will see. And I'm wondering it that case feeder will have a very short life.....so I ordered one before procrastination-caused disappointment. I just have a bad feeling I can't shake. This year at the Shot Show RCBS had both their Pro Chuckers set up all right....but neither had a case feeder??? Bad Omen?

What a wait!
After canceling twice from Titan, for ignoring my order for 2 months.....I ordered from Grafs when they finally showed some in stock 3 days ago, I finally am the proud owner of a Lee APP Deluxe!
It's actually pretty cool.....think it's going to be useful! It's certainly a light tool. I didn't get the swager kit for it, but that can wait.
Will be giving you guys a blow by blow....but be patient....this isn't one of my better weeks.... John Lee certainly has some ingenious ideas.....taking after his daddy, for sure.

Decided to mod it just a tad more to make the feeder deprime .40S&W a lot better.......thought it didn't work......then one little tweak......
Still got one little problem......see if you can see it..... ( you might need to push the center icon to make it full screen to see it......maybe not)
Here's the expensive and hard to build mod......
Well.....this is before the slight tweak....the spensive part is one of those almost too pliable Christmas ball hangers.

Greg was using paper clip to stiff to form as to the ornament hanger? I did see that it skipped one. Was it hung up??

The ornament hanger vs. paper clip: It works just as well and was a lot easier to form. I was able to tweak the shape so much easier, yet pushing a little case was not going to deform it at all....not even close. I was fortunate to find it in my junk drawer.....was actually looking for a paperclip....
The skipped case: No....I am old....got tired of stoking and that one didn't make it back enough to drop the next case. Good to know. Short stroking is not that disastrous to the APP (at least in that kind of operation....just an extra stroke needed. On most presses a short stroke causes all kinds of hell.
I can't think of a faster way to deprime first if you want to clean a bunch of cases with a tumbler and pins.
The final tweak. Wire reshaped and recessed 1/32" so the cases didn't ever drop on it.

Yes short stroking does ruin the flow of things. Yep been there done that more than once and it does raise the frustration factor quite a bit.

Greg, you've done it again ! Nice mod ! Also, watching the film clip, I was taken by how the red thingie that feeds the cases always retracts before the decapping takes place. If I were trying to feed them that fast by hand, I know I'd get a finger pinched within a minute or two ! Thanks for sharing !

Pooh....yes, the design is near the point of perfection already. John Lee either has some engineer as smart as his Dad.....or HE is! I was impressed! The shuttle doesn't require the mod for bigger cases like .45....haven't tried 9mm because I don't load that one.....nor have I tried the tall ones like .357. It's one thing to make such a shuttle work for one caliber....quite another for one that works equally well on every caliber.......in fact I don't think that's possible.
For that reason you have to be pliable.....luckily Lee offers just the shuttle assembly for $10.......so you can tweak it a little for each caliber where needed. That means I don't have to take the wire off to use it on another caliber....just make one that's perfect for each case that needs it.
Before adding the wire pusher this happened on every single .40 S&W case......next video.
Now you know why it needed something to push at the base.
Below: Close up of the jam.....I think caused by the new redesigned X-Press shell holders that are now plowed in the center for proud primers. The plow was widened at each end and allow the case to tip into the plow and jam. Last picture is of the redesigned X-press shell holders.
See, I think 9mm will tip as well. 357's with their big bases probably won't need the wire...nor .45.
