Well I and my hunting buddy hit the woods today 10-28-19. I did not take the crossbow today but instead took the 22 WMR rifle and my H&R Sportsman 22lr revolver. Well I missed a few squirrels and while sitting there thinking ya know a shooting stick might have helped. As I'm looking around for the next ones to appear I glance down and see a limb and start thinking hey use that and see if it helps or not. So I pick it up snapped off what I didn't need and waited. Well it was sometime later until the bushy tails got active again. One sat long enough so I could get my woods shooting stick and rifle in place a lot more steadier now and squeezed off the shot. Now I got one in the bag and awhile later number two was in the bag. Since this was a good spot for squirrels I left it there for when I return for the next squirrel outing.

Hard to relate to this for me, we don't have big squirrals like you do. Are they nuisance animals or do you eat them? Here in the fourcorners the squirrels are the same size as prairie dogs and they aren't a regular target for the locals like the nuisance prairie dog towns. But good shootin with your stick! I have yet to try a shooting stick....so you are sold on that method now? I haven't seen an eastern hardwood forest (woods) since I was twenty one. Sounds fun. Rocky mountain conifer forest is all I know now. For game here, I see coyotes, mountain lions, elk, mule deer, and black bear, and hear an occasional big foot at night. I hear moose are back in Southern Colorado, but I haven't seen their haunts. The last Grissly was killed in self defense in that country in 1972....the shooter was fined $5,000 I heard. I hope they don't come back......wolves neither. In souther NM and Arizona the stupids are planting Mexican Grey wolves....the cattle and sheep ranchers are not happy. I smell war.
My day was not as fun as yours.....went to the office at 8:00 AM. Lasted an hour, and came home and went to bed.....again....yuck.

Hacker, improvise, adapt, and overcome ! Support is a real help for an ethical shot. I take all I can get !
Greg- do what you can, when you can. After my cardiac escapade a few years back, my first reloading project was 500 .38 Specials. Took me three months. One day, I went down and picked out the dies. The next day, I adjusted the sizing die...you get the idea. Keep plugging, but don't make yourself sicker ! BTW, about a year ago, you talked me into trying Boron. I don't know if it's worked, but I have, at least coincidentally had a relatively pain free year !

Greg, Yes I do eat the squirrels I get. I'll put'em in a noodle soup like chicken but use squirrel. I make what I call jerky on the bone. I'll marinate them in a 50/50 mix of Worcestershire and teriyaki. Let it marinate 24 to 48 hrs. pat dry, put in smoker at 200 degrees for two to four hrs depending if you want soft or a harder jerky style. Oh and before you ask what kind of meat does it taste like squirrel is squirrel. This has a taste all its own. In fact if you put squirrel in something I can taste that it's squirrel.

Hacker, I heard chicken tasted like squirrel ! I also have an occasional Grey squirrel,I do them on BBQ spit or split them on the grill and they are tasty. Greg, take it easy one step at a time, I know it's hard.

Here one squirrel with a hole in it, isn't even a mouthful....sorta like Doves....but they do shoot and eat those.....mixed with a little buckshot they are still tasty. Hi Bob! One step? Oh hell, I couldn't do that. Felt way better today...put in 4 hours at the office....no jobsites yet. Pooh, I hear ya....this is my second trip....I need to seriously figure out what makes it happen. I'm thinking its got a sugar connection....that's gonna be hard. No more Dr. Pepper, candy apples (apples are tree ripe now and we grown a lot of them here...I'll have to stick to just the apples. Dr. ordered me to cut out salt....I think he's full of it on that. I don't have that high of blood pressure til I get a blockage. Come-on Pooh, you are getting older not younger, the boron helped .....now I find out that it helps even more if you double the dose...even triple it....take it two, three, or four times a day....then you might even get more good from that borax! It won't hurt you, Indians in Nevada where borax is mined eat it like candy mixed in higher doses straight in their coffee. I wish I could find such a remedy for heart disease. The herbalists say Hawthorne Berrys and Cayenne Pepper (teaspoon in hot water 3X a day) Not quite ready for that pain. Maybe I'll try it when I sure I won't end up in the ER over it.

Hacker, we have gray and red squirrels in New Hamster-are you far enough south to get fox squirrels ? Grays are the eaters here as the reds are really small. Squirrel, and many of God's other creatures, end up in my infamous "Clean out the Fridge and Cupboards" stew.

Pooh, We have as for hunting the "Tree Rat" grey, black, red, and Fox squirrel. Grey squirrels are the most abundant here. I have seen red but will pass on them and have only seen three black in all my years hunting. I have only bagged one fox squirrel along with my son-in-law as that day was a first for us both. Me my first fox squirrel and him his first at bagging game. Oh we do have flying squirrel but they are not on the list to hunt here.

Yeah, we have the flying squirrels also. They aren't as skilled in avoiding the cats as the others ! Those and our reds aren't protected-the reds have a body about like a malnourished chipmunk, and are considered pests, as they're so distructive in and around buildings. Since you expended ammunition, I assume fox squirrels are eaters ?
BTW, any word from Larry ? He's been quiet !

Pooh, The before mentioned squirrels that are listed to hunt are eaters. Yes Larry has been quiet.
